A virus cannot travel either. It cannot go a few inches on it's own. But it can travel the world by replicating itself within the host body, and moving from host to host to host.

A virus cannot mutate. It cannot replicate within a host body either. Only a functioning cell can copy a virus.
There is no such thing as a variant of a variant. A different virus is a different virus.
Sure they can. Airborne viruses can travel the world on the breeze. Many waterborne viruses can travel the oceans easily.
