Ukranian counteroffensive making inroads

Again one of two things are going to happen...Either Ukraine agrees to be neutral and largely disarmed (And the Russians have recently said there must be Ukrainian regime change as well) or else Ukraine will unconditionally surrender. Israel status is fantasy from the children who run Washington.

I actually agree with you. Hell must be freezing over.

Offense without air superiority is supposed to be exceedingly difficult

Agreed. OTOH, if the neither side has air superiority, it's closer to a push...with defenders having the advantage.

What makes this war different is to see two First World nations using drones versus conventional aircraft. The US has been using drones for years in Afghanistan, but the Taliban and ISIS didn't have a drone capability. Same for Syria, AFAIK. The war in Ukraine is making strong use of drones on both sides.

At some point, maybe combat pilots will be unnecessary

or simply rare. For the most part, drones can do most of the work. Having a crewed aircraft in the area may be necessary for drone control if there is a lot of jamming or other attempts by the enemy to disrupt drone operations. There's also range; an air-dropped drone can be smaller and carry less fuel but needs to be closer to the target.

I can see the day when a drone is the size of a .50 bullet and can be flown against an individual with minimal damage to those around him/her.

Offense is also more difficult than defense. With defense they have had months to dig in and prepare.

Yes, they seemingly prepared extensive fortifications.

I don't think it's wise to dismiss the Russian military as a joke, they are capable of learning from their mistakes and adapting.

I don't think infantry or tanks were ever their strong suit. Their strong suit seems to be artillery and electronic warfare

The Russian Army is a joke because Putin and his oligarchs gutted it for profit. Now they are playing catch-up ball. Artillery is "the King of Battle" and has the advantage of being back from the front lines so it's easier to protect and experienced artillerymen can be kept safe...unlike the Russian cannon fodder on the front lines.

‘The king of battle’ — How US artillery in the hands of Ukrainians may reshape the war with Russia

The 90 M777 howitzers that the United States is providing to Ukraine will not only make it more difficult for the Russians to move out in the open but the guns could also support a future Ukrainian offensive to reclaim Russian-occupied parts of their country, experts told Task & Purpose.

About 70 of the 155 mm guns along with roughly 70,000 artillery rounds have been transferred to Ukraine so far, a senior defense official told reporters on Monday. More than 200 Ukrainian troops are expected to be trained on how to operate the howitzers by the end of Monday with another 50 Ukrainian service members scheduled to begin training later this week....

...“The one thing on artillery is: We’ve always called it ‘the king of battle,’ back to Napoleonic times, just because there’s really no defense against it once it’s firing,” said Marine Col. James W. Frey, a senior military fellow at the Center for a New American Security think tank in Washington, D.C.

Corruption really hurt the quality and preparation of the Russian military

I think it is remarkable a second rate European nation can fight a supposed global military superpower to a draw.

Russian officers and soldiers in the field have been learning from their mistakes, and I have read even Ukranian sources acknowledge this. I would be surprised if the Russian military just cuts and runs from Crimea and Donbass. That's what some people were hoping. It's probably going to be a slugfest.

Talk about stretching to support a fantasy!!

Russia hasn’t gone all in

They have committed only about a tenth of their resources to this while Ukraine is using everything they have

Russia is simply letting Ukraine expend all their resources, they are in no rush

If Putin wanted a full wartime mobilization in Russia he would have already done it, long ago.

Putin is walking a fine line because he doesn't want the affluent classes of urban European Russia to feel the pain from this war. That has the potential of creating political instability. Putin sold his war as a limited special operation.

It is ethnic minorities from the autonomous republics and poor rural Russians who are overwhelming being required to serve and die in Ukraine.

If Putin is deposed, I think the new Russian government would negotiate a settlement akin to the Israelis and the West Bank.

Your defense of Russia is notable, Tink. How long have you been anti-West and a Russophile?

The loss of over 10,000 Russian military armored vehicles was a feint to trick Ukraine.
They’ve now lost 2/3’s of their tanks, 2001 as of may 31.
The more they lose the more the Zelenskyy’s are duped into believing their military is being effective.
That strategy seems to be working.

The Russian people are all the way behind this military operation.
