UAW On Strike Against GM Plan To Close Factories, Lay Off Workers, Despite Trump.

Trump's America: Profits First!

"The union has been fighting to stop GM from closing auto assembly plants in Ohio and Michigan, and arguing workers deserve higher pay after years of record profits for GM in North America.

GM argues the plant shutdowns are necessary responses to market shifts, and that UAW wages and benefits are expensive compared with competing non-union auto plants in southern U.S. states. In its statement, the automaker said its offer to the union included solutions for the Michigan and Ohio assembly plants currently lacking products.

A person familiar with GM’s offer said that could include producing a future electric vehicle in Detroit.

It could also include turning a plant in Lordstown, Ohio, into an electric vehicle battery plant or going through with the proposed sale of the plant to a group affiliated with electric vehicle start-up Workhorse Group Inc.

A new battery plant could give some UAW workers at Lordstown the chance to remain with GM.

...

several Democratic presidential candidates said they backed the UAW, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, former Vice President Joe Biden and Representative Tim Ryan. "

Buy no GM products until this is resolved. To do so would be unpatriotic and unsupportive of American labor.

"GM’s offer said that could include producing a future electric vehicle in Detroit."

I don't think 'could include' is very settling language for those facing layoffs and plant closures.

If GM wanted to make commitments for that then that would be a different offer.

Dontcha suppose if GM had sales to support additional output they would move to meet that demand ?
Fact is their outlook is shakey.

I thought BO gave the UAW the shares he stole from investors. That would have them striking against themselves.

There is something wrong with an economy that exclusively rewards the richest at the expense of the rest.

Straight up capitalism is destructive to the longevity of America.

When the crash came , unions accepted steep clawbacks to keep the auto companies from going under. Since then, the companies have made huge profits and returned nothing to the workers. If the companies did it, this situation would not have arisen.

Testing out new names for the UAW! Right now, URAW has my vote. United Robot Auto Workers. What say you all? Try to organize THEM, left ‘tards!

That is because they knew they were being overpaid already for their skills. No way anyone else was going to pay them that much if it went under. Nice try.

What does that have to do with this ?

They are not building a better mousetrap and noone is beating a path to their door.

Generous union goodies are part of the reason those companies were bailed out. Evidently the unions want to recycle this caca to give them a reason to exist. Those people pay 4% of their medical out of pocket, did you know that? I pay about 20% for my employer plan, and 8% if I use the VA! There are a bunch of other things GM was about to do anyway, but they may dig in now, because this is just a political stunt

A union goes on strike because they're losing their jobs?
And boycotting GM will somehow increase the demand for the products there's not enough demand for?
This sounds like an alternative universe.

Absolutely wrong. You made crap up and posted it. They knew GM and other auto companies were in deep trouble. They tried to keep them afloat and it was successful. The big 3 generally appreciate workers more than most companies. They provide large profit-sharing bonuses at Christmas time. The unions are somewhat involved in many management decisions. They have a small seat at the table.
Now GM wants to keep the profits for execs and stockholders. When a strike happens watch and see what happen to those profits. Workers are the ones who produce profits.

There is a reason unions have failed in this country. Gene pool is thinning out.
