What I don't understand is why people waste public money on putting up statues at all, especially on racist heroes (there's more to be said for Lee than for most, fair play). They just interfere with traffic for no apparent artistic purpose - over here they even spoil country walks by carving up trees! The point is that most of them offend whole sections of the population, so why should they tolerate it? Churchill, for instance, sent troops to be ready to shoot down people here, and Mrs Thatcher destroyed our industry for political reasons. Why should we tolerate statues to public enemies?

Former President Trump on Wednesday blasted the decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Va., saying it would result in a “complete desecration.”
Trump has defended such statues from being removed in the past, calling activists' effort a means to "take away" U.S. history and culture by calling for the removal of Confederate statues.
Trump then claimed that had Lee been alive, he would have led a successful military operation in Afghanistan.

Good points. If some private group wants to raise money for a statue and put it on private property, knock themselves out. Otherwise, no. BTW, most if not all Civil War statues of southern heroes were put up decades after the War, in an effort to glorify the South and during the Jim Crow (post 1900) era. So by their very creation they were meant to be a racist symbol.
Because Lee was a traitor, racist, and loser.

What makes RB's post even more ironic is he was born, bred, and lives in Pennsylvania -- a Northern state that fought to preserve the union. How odd that so-called conservatives in northern states support insurrection, civil war, slavery, racism, and monuments to all the above, eh?
Yeah, I don't think we should be memorializing traitors and racists...and I also recognize that monument, which was erected years after the Civil War by people who didn't even fight in it, was a tool of white supremacy and oppression since it lived on public ground.
The message it sent to Black people, Jews, immigrants, and minorities was that you take pride in your oppressive past and want to warn those uppity minorities that they're not the ones in control.
Well, they won't be standing there as monuments to racists, intimidating non-racists in the public space.
It would be like if I was your neighbor, and I raised a flag on my lawn that depicted the burning, torture, and murder of your family, with me dancing around your burning house with a gas can and lit match, and then I got all your other neighbors to fly that flag, got City hall to fly that flag, and got several private businesses that you frequent to also fly that flag...if that happened to you, you would be crying your fucking eyes out about harassment and intimidation. You would scream, screech, whine, cry, bitch, and moan that everyone around you hates you and wants to see you dead because everywhere you turn, you see people waving that flag that depicts all those terrible things happening to you and your family.
If that ever happened to you, you would be the biggest fucking crybaby on the goddamned planet about it.
You'd never shut up about how you're being victimized, how you're being intimidated...you'd run to the police, you're whine on JPP, you'd do everything to end that constant, daily reminder that everyone around you hates you and wants you to die.

Lee had some integrity, but he was still a trader to the USA, even a polite gentleman can commit insurrection.
He was asked to serve his country but refused, instead taking up arms against her. He was also my great, great, great uncle.
