Former President Trump on Wednesday blasted the decision to remove a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Va., saying it would result in a “complete desecration.”
Trump has defended such statues from being removed in the past, calling activists' effort a means to "take away" U.S. history and culture by calling for the removal of Confederate statues.
Trump then claimed that had Lee been alive, he would have led a successful military operation in Afghanistan.

We do not require a statue to remind us of the horrible acts the south perpetrated on America. We know it happened to great shame. An army of Americans tried to overthrow the government to keep slavery. There is nothing redeeming about it.

Or possibly, is it that the North fought to keep the United States together, preserve the union, keep America great. And, upon winning the war, a war which was always theirs to win when you consider the odds, they chose not to rub it in the face of the losers, so they did not go around naming everything after their generals, and they did not go around putting up statues to memorialize their victory. They were just glad it was over, and the USA could be the USA again.
