So what? Many were, whether it fits your propaganda or not isn't a point. 90% of the military are in support roles, not combat infantry, in those days. MY father was a 'company clerk' while parachuting into the jungles in the Philippines; the military uses whoever is available for whatever they're doing, regardless of job classifications. Job titles and MOS's are a lot more flexible than you think.

Republicans supported all of them, and in fact accused Democrats of not being aggressive enough. The media painted Tet as a win because Generals kept lying to them and the President throughout the war, making it a propaganda coup for domestic commies to exploit.
Modern Republicans carry on that campaign. They don't really give a shit about the country any more than Democrats do; they just want the power, same as the other side's sociopaths.
Republicans (a majority of them) want, if we go to war, to go in to win. And we want generals who want that same thing.
Unless they're Democrats, then they try to sabotage the war effort and then claim they saved the day. Works both ways.
FDR was elected four times, Republicans can't get over that humiliation. The only war Republicans won was the Civil War, killed more Americans than any other war, defeated a bunch of Spaniards in Cuba, and then Reagan went after the mighty Grenada Threat. Bush II won one, but then fucked up the 'peace' and left too many of them alive while Uncle Dick's company stuffed its pockets with 'nation building' scams.
