Let's focus on Hicks since that's the context of the Trump Tower meeting she lied about to Congress.

So before, when you said soliciting assistance from a hostile foreign government in the form of illegally-acquired "dirt" wasn't illegal, it turns out it actually is very illegal.

Lying about it to Congress is also illegal. Both Hicks and Uday lied to Congress about this meeting.

Trump knew Russia had already illegally obtained hacked e-mails from Podesta and the DNC because Scavino, who was a part of Trump's campaign, tweeted that on May 11th, 2016. So the meeting was set up with the purpose to discuss that "dirt" and then devise the strategy for leaking it during the campaign. And that's precisely what happened. Trump learned Russia had "dirt" on Hillary, had his son arrange the meeting at Trump Tower, at that meeting they coordinated the release of what they had obtained and future attempts to hack Clinton directly. Then on July 25th, during the Democratic Convention, Wikileaks dumped the Podesta and DNC e-mails. Then two days later, Trump was on TV soliciting Russia's help, and that same day he solicited their help on TV, they started their spear-phishing on Clinton directly.
