Quite often, the killer IS a vet. Because we don't give a shit about the mental issues involved with war.
There seems to be a post Vietnam era attitude in this nation that all veterans are heroes. No doubt because we treated the Nam vets so poorly when they returned.

In this case, the guy who jumped the shooter repeatedly referred to his service as the reason for his action. Anyone who has trained in any form of fighting would probably do the same thing, especially since the opportunity arose where this guy was able to approach the gunman from behind.

Because serial rapists will severely hurt them right off of the bat, and then all bets are off.

If the classes were only about self defense, which is only half of the benefit of training.

I recently lost a dear friend who was in Vietnam when your husband was. Agent Orange related cancer after 50 years.

I didn't know him in the early days of his returning home when he did the heroin thing, drinking and lord knows what else.

I knew him for about 35 years. He was an often angry drunk when we met, but quit alcohol and only used high grade weed in the later years.

He was very active with veterans locally, which helped him as much as those he counseled.

I often talked him down on some of his bad days.

He often credited his (second) wife with saving his life, and often wondered how she put up with him.
 
It's an often mocked political cliche that liberals are open minded, generous of spirit, tend to have an easy come easy go attitude about things while conservatives are close minded, uptight and selfish, but the hard split in opinion
about trans that appears in this thread gives support to that cliche. Surprises me how much support.

They were both self defense and how to aggressively stop an attacker with no holds barred. They even had training on how to deal with a car jacker.

Yeah, but I got to thinking,.... if, say, your were a cis-gendered, biological male and you met and fell in love with this woman (who was the hero of the Colorado night Club massacre) when it came to having intimate relations, there would be a serious problem. You are absolutely correct about Nam vets. I was spit on called a baby burner at the airport on my way home. I do have the satisfaction of breaking the nose of the guy who spit on me. LOL
