Reiner was a moron for thinking that guns cause violence. He sadly found out that PEOPLE are the only real weapons of violence. The tool they use is irrelevant. This is tragic - perhaps other leftists will wake up and grasp the reality of this all and future violence can be stemmed?

This has actually been reasonably confirmed in police videos. Even from a distance, a knife poses a very real threat even against a gun, even against someone a lot better trained with a gun than depicted in Mythbusters.

Heck, during the mass shootings in Australia, an UNARMED man disarmed the shooter and threatened him with his own gun!

A book can be an effective weapon. I would use two, one to throw and close distance, and the other to whack the idiot senseless.

I've even used poker chips. Even popcorn can work to either close distance and deal with a threat or to break the conflict and escape.
