Today's the Big Day!

WRONG. he said he wouldn't vote for an anti-sodomy law. He is on record stating he does not believe in birth control, I just gave you the entire quote.

Further, he is talking about overturning Griswald Vs Connecticut, which would allow states to ban birth control. Calling it state's rights, doesn't make it okay, or change this in any way.

You call yourself a libertarian? You just crawled into bed with the worse theocratic cretins in this country.

Not really, I was looking for a source different from angry people. I'll continue to look into it. As I said, I haven't paid much attention to Santorum. Banning birth control would be stupid, and impossible.

I was looking at his quotes, like this one.

"You shouldn’t create constitutional rights when states do dumb things," he told Tapper. "You should let the people decide if the states are doing dumb things, get rid of the legislature and replace them."

But the story didn't have this quote:

Santorum says, in all seriousness, “One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country…. It’s not okay. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”

That's from a different one.

I don't see that garnering him much support, most GOP'ers aren't Catholic and don't think birth control should be banned.

I love the smell of fried lefty brains in the morning after an evangelical conservative scores a big upset and makes them all nervous.

.............."God Damn it, we won't be able to kill our babies any longer if Santorum gets in"........

You were looking for an excuse. Any woman who isn't angry about a man running on forced childbirth is a frigging idiot.

And Damo is a great example of why the Libertarian movement is known as a "sausage fest", why it attracts very few women, and why women can never depend on so-called libertarians to stand for them. Because liberty to a Libertarian means liberty for men.

White, heteronormative men btw.

I'm literally laughing my arse off this morning. I don't really think Obama deserves re-election, but he's going to get it.

No one on the left is afraid of Santorum; it's a lefy dream that he gets the nod (he won't). What happened last night was that Mitt Romney won the GOP nomination. And the base can't stand that guy.

Cut Damo some slack. He spent the past few weeks trying to figure out how he was going to apologize for Newt for the next 10 months. Now, he has to switch on a dime to Santorum...

He is tap dancing fast isn't he?

They just whistle the tune and it only takes Damo a minute or two to start dancing.

Forced child birth for all women who have sex, every time? Give me the beat!

So you're not only a fem nazi, you're also a racist. Nice.

Nah, libertarian means liberty for pretty much everybody. You're getting upset over what I have found that quotes him on the topic, but aren't patient enough to let me research it fully. I'm okay with that, you're clearly angry. I think that's silly, he isn't in office now. It's likely because of such extreme views that he isn't.

I did find this quote, which is a bit more than worrisome and I believe will not net him much support.

Santorum says, in all seriousness, “One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country…. It’s not okay. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”

He's a bit of a nutter. The government is not the place to enforce your religious views on "how things are supposed to be"...

I agree with you on that statement. Santorum is not going to be the nominee, but he is now a national figure after this. He will get a lot more attention from the media in the debates now. He better not say "how things are supposed to be" or he'll be out.

He shields his hypocrisy with the Constitution.

"In an interview with Jake Tapper on ABC News, Santorum reiterated his opposition to the Supreme Court’s 1965 ruling that prevented Connecticut from banning contraception. “The state has a right to do that, I have never questioned that the state has a right to do that," he said. "It is not a constitutional right. The state has the right to pass whatever statutes they have. That's the thing I have said about the activism of the Supreme Court--they are creating rights, and it should be left up to the people to decide."

Ron Paul has mainstreamed State's Rights within the Republican Party. The most dangerous ideology to any citizen who is not a heteronormative, white male in this country's history.

It's okay to ban birth control if a state does it. They somehow have set up an ideology that claims to be against government power, while setting up 50 different totalitarian states who can deprive women and people of color of all rights.

It's insane and doesn't even make sense. I love how they are now claiming that Ron Paul can't be racist because he's against the drug war. WRONG. Ron Paul is against the federal government prosecuting drug crimes. He would have no problem with individual states executing convicted drug users. Worse, about 90% of the blacks in jail today for drug charges were convicted by the STATES.

They are insane and stupid, and liberals who give any quarter to them have no knowledge.

Huh? I thought we on the left were all shaking in our boots about this guy.....

As far as banning birth control, it would make this country no better than China with their one child policy. In our case, as many children as women could bear.

And the more I read about Ron Paul, the more flaky I think he is. Now he's trying to disavow those racist, anti-semitic newsletters from the 90s, saying he didn't write them and was unaware of the contents. Yet they went out under his imprimatur and as far as I know he's never apologized.

From the Ron Paul Political Report, October 1992 (PDF), under the subtitle "Blast 'Em?":
"If you live in a major city, you've probably heard about the newest threat to your life and limb, and your family: carjacking.
"It's the hip-hop thing to do among the urban youth who play unsuspecting whites like pianos. The youth simply walk up to a car they like, pull a gun, tell the family to get out, steal their jewelry and wallets, and take the car to wreck. Such actions have ballooned in recent months.

2) Malicious Gays Spreading AIDS
From the Ron Paul Survival Report, September 1994 (PDF):
"At the recent world AIDS conference in Japan, researchers admitted what I have long told you: there is no prospect of a cure or vaccine for AIDS. For one thing, the virus keeps mutating. A drug that might work today won't work tomorrow. Researchers also admitted that they had been lying about the incidence of heterosexual AIDS to increase funding for homosexual programs.
"Those who don't commit sodomy, who don't get a blood transfusion, and who don't swap needles, are virtually assured of not getting AIDS unless they are deliberately infected by a malicious gay."

From the Ron Paul Political Report, October 1990 (PDF):
"A mob of black demonstrators, led by the 'Rev.' Al Sharpton, occupied and closed the Statue of Liberty recently, demanding that New York be renamed Martin Luther King City 'to reclaim it for our people.'
"Hmmm. I hate to agree with the Rev. Al, but maybe a name change is in order. Welfaria? Zooville? Rapetown? Dirtburg? Lazyopolis?
"But Al, the Statue of Liberty? Next time, hold that demonstration at a food stamp bureau or a crack house."

After watching Santorum's speech, I've found that I sorta like the guy. That's not to say I'd ever vote for him - I certainly do not agree with his radical right-wing stance on social issues - but, I do have respect for what he accomplished. He spent only $30k and was floating in the single digits just last month. So losing to Romney by only 8 votes is pretty fucking impressive!
I have never met a succesful politician that wasn't both charming and persuasive and for the most part decent people. That's what really bothers me about todays politics of personal destruction. Both sides are responsible for creating a very poisonous political climate which is not good for our nation. I met John Ashcroft back when he was a Missouri Senator, a man whose politics I found frightening but much to my surprise when I met him I found him not only friendly, approachable, attentive and extremely witty with a well developed sense of humor. I came away from that experience liking the man immensly even though I still deplored his politics.

santorum's been my bête noire ever since he ran for his first public office here in the early 90s. He is a deceitful, lying hypocritical p.o.s. of the first order. He lied to get elected and lied even more to cover up his initial lies. If he advances to becoming a serious contender, which I doubt, I'll spend every spare minute I have working against him. He's a two-faced, sanctimonious phony with a forked tongue bigger than Nagini's.
You say that like it's a bad thing?

I wonder how many women in Iowa voted for the guy who came out against birth control and is on record stating that he would like to overturn Griswald and allow states to BAN birth control with no interference from the Supreme Court?

These women need professional help, fast.

Truly the most crawling, pathetic, mewling, cretins to ever walk God's green earth. This is assuming they ever get off their knees and actually walk upright.

Amen to that! In many cases the people who want stricter laws are the ones who enjoyed the freedom the laws allowed when they were younger. I find nothing more repulsive than a person who had an abortion and then protests against abortion.

:dunno:

I didn't pay that much attention to him until now. His surprising showing in Iowa makes him somewhat relevant for a while...

I'll have to look into that. I'll need a bit more evidence than somebody just saying he is.
Santorum is also notoriously anti-science. He provided bad advice and access to legal council to the Dover, PA board of education in the now famous Intelligent Design court case which set back the citizens of Dover back a million dollars when they lost.
