romney or obama or a third party

i think obama will win. romney has some good ideas, but he is really lukewarm. he is also a bit of an al gore, in that, he is fairly boring, unlike obama. just general thoughts...will get specific later

gun to my head I am going to say romney. He has all the momentum right now, is probably going to end up with more funds, he's improving in almost every demographic (women), is leading among the middle class, leading among independents, a lot of states that democrats thought were out of reach are now in play. The economy doesn't seem to be improving, this election still looks to be a referendum, and if all that holds, I don't see how obama can win. Of course, we are too far out to say definitively one way or the other.

I've gotta be optimistic and say Romney. However, unlike McCain, who I thought would win based solely on wishful thinking (I even started an idiotic thread predicting McCain would win Pennsylvania), there are some indications that Romney can pull it off.

Yurt, don't give up so fucking quickly. We CAN win this. My roommates and I have already persuaded around 25 of our apathetic friends that they need to vote for Romney. We've told them that when they receive their ballots, they will bring them to our house and we'll all fill them out together, just to make sure it gets done. If one out of every 4 or 5 conservatives convinced just 1 person to vote for Romney, we'd send Obama on a helicopter ride back to Chicago by a landslide.

Hell, I've even started telling coworkers. I have a Romney sign in my office window, and when people ask about it, I get a chance to explain why I believe Romney is the best man for the job. The problem with that "rule" about not talking about politics at work is it never seems to apply to liberals (they're always VERY loud about their "principles" in the workplace), and I say fuck that shit. I have just as much a right to voice my opinions as they do.

I always go with the consensus, because I refuse to make decisions on things like these. The current consensus of the markets, polling trends, and most experts is that Obama will win. However, the consensus isn't very reliable.

Can Romney win this? He certainly can. I mean, in 2008 Obama was pretty much ahead the entire season. The only bright point in McCain's campaign was the short boost after he picked Palin. This is starting out more even.

One thing that works in Romney's favor are the new SuperPAC's. They can take out ads supporting or opposing candidates as they wish, as long as they maintain some fiction of independence from the campaign. They can also take unlimited contributions from individuals. So, billionaires have been contributing literally hundreds of millions to conservative SuperPAC's. Conservative SuperPAC's alone are estimated to take in over a billion this year. That Dwarfs both the expected Romney and GOP total of 800 million, and Obama's record breaking campaign in 2008 (600 million). Just one SuperPAC, American Crossroads, is expected to take in over 300 million, almost as much as McCain did in 2008. Obama is getting a lot of donations, but the conservatives are getting a much smaller amount of much larger donations.

If you're convincing people to vote, why is it for someone who isn't Gary Johnson?

I agree with your assessment of Romney, and am suprising refreshed by your ability to have an objective assessment. Personally I belive that dispite Romney being a bit of an Al Gore and lukewarm, he will win due to the Conservatives very successfull attempts to paint the President as a socialist big spender who has destroyed an otherwise fine economy.

i haven't given up on romney. but it is hard to ignore his flaws and hard to ignore that obama is a great campaigner. if the economy turns around, romney isn't going to have much to criticize obama on.

My guess is Romney isn't going to accept public funding for his campaign...

No one accepts public funding for their campaigns anymore. The checkoff on tax forms that funds public campaign finance was never particularly popular, probably because it was never entirely clear that it wasn't simply a straight donation. The amount of people ticking it off has fallen from 25% to 8% over the years. And the amount hasn't been adjusted to inflation. There's no way it could ever keep up with private funding.
