The shower wash is a good metaphor and here's why. You need to wash away preconceived notions and beliefs.
Do you live near a major city? During the school year check out the kids at the bus stop going to school. Just look at their clothes and the expression on their faces. Check out after school places where kids go. Talk to the staff. Look at the kids.
When you get "toughened up" go to a hospital that specializes in sick children. I recommend not eating before you go as some folks become physically ill seeing what can only be described as the horror some of those children go through.
Do you know anything about abused children? Have you had any real-life contact? Actually looked one in the eye?
I have. At one time I did mechanical repairs for a school in an economically depressed area. I saw everything from depression causing withdrawal to 6 and 7 year olds acting like little thugs. I spent time conversing with the "Special Ed" teacher. I even supervised her class on several occasions when she was ill and needed a break.
The Principal kept the front door of the school locked as parents would walk in to her office and scream at her. She asked if she could page me if things went out of control.
I've seen it, PmP. I wouldn't subject an animal to such treatment let alone another human being. What's ugly and despicable is people insisting children go through that in the name of morals or some other terribly misguided belief.
If you truly believe what you write and are interested in children's welfare check out what I mentioned. Don't you owe it to yourself?

We all know a stable, loving family is the best environment but the reality is there are less and less of them. So, do we keep whining about it or try to come up with a solution.
Just like we did with the elderly. The ideal solution was for families to look after their elderly. They didn't so the government stepped in.

DNA is but one way to define something. As others have noted something may be of human material but not necessarily a "being".
Give those scientists a DNA sample of a human liver and a DNA sample from a fetus. They can not tell which sample is a human being. All they can determine is if the sample is human material.
Understand? Something composed of human material does not necessarily mean it's a human being.

Nonsense. To be considered a human being something has to be considered an organism. Look up the definition of organism. A self-contained unit, if you will.
In the case of zygotes and fetuses they are not self-contained. The mother's body, her organs, her life support system is also used by the zygote/fetus.
If the zygote/fetus is a self-contained unit, an organism, a human being, no problem. Just remove it.

Something that can grow into fully developed human being is definitely an organsim. But thanks for new material with which to ridicule you in upcoming posts.
Organisms can be dependant. Like parasites and worms. We might say this stage of life, the human being parasitizes the mother. It's still an organism. Just like if the mother had ticks and fleas and worms, they would all still be organisms.

I was addressing SM's comment about the conservative solution. My point is it isn't a solution. Whether or not a stable family is the best environment for raising children is moot. The reality is many families are not stable and that will become more prevalent as time passes so we need a different approach.
I'm saying government should provide universal day care, free medical and dental, subsidies to poor/single parent families.
If children are the future, if children are as important as Conservatives claim, then let's make sure they're adequately looked after regardless of the circumstances into which they are born.
Show us, the Liberals and Libertarians and others, that Conservatives are not just mouthing platitudes.
Just look at the Repubs stopping an extension of unemployment benefits. How many children will be affected when their parents lose their home or don't have sufficient food?
It's obvious who doesn't give a damn about children.
