except I didn't "2nd guess" Libya. I saw that disaster coming in 2011
and I saw the militia rule in the 2014 civil war that led to Libya today's failed terrorist state.
I saw the same on Iraq -many of us did even with the "yellow ribbon fever".
The fact of inactions also carries a price; as Haas and my previous posts show.
Iranian expansionism, and alliance with Russia etc. are the fruits of Obama's decisions
I agree with you that Iraq was the grand FUBAR -but Obama's silly timetable escalation/withdrawal in Afgh
also carries a price.
In short Obama really has no foreign policy successes to point to - only not screwing up as bad as Iraq as his "success"
so it looks like this will work out to trumps benefit lol.
The poor liberals keep opening the door right into their own faces
i saw a couple minutes on Saudi Arabia. Rubio resorted to the old saw "SA is a human rights abusers -agreed?"
Tillerson asked him what he meant -and Rubio trotted out "lashing" ( in truth it's mild caning that leaves no marks)
and "women can't drive"
Tillerson agreed -but pointed out the Kingdom has been making reforms. Not as quickly as we'dlike -but they are sending more and more students to foreign universities ( a good way to understand the west) - as well as some electoral reforms -like women holding office.
Rubio (being the stuck on stupid neocon he is) kept repeating " but they are human rights abusers - correct?
Tillerson shot back- " but they are reforming -slowly and in the right direction"
"What good does it do to label them? They may never get our values, but they are at least improving"
"Better for us to engage then to shun them"
Rubio said "Ok" and STFU
no he didn't have "legitimate concerns" the INTEL came from Sid Blumentahl via Clinon and what they saw on CNN.The thing is, neither you nor anyone else has any idea what the eventual outcome would have been had Obama taken the opposite course, because there is no reliable way of predicting what might happen in that region as a result of anything we do. Obama had legitimate concerns that Gaddaffi might carry out his threats to engage in a massacre.
Second guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking is all guys like you and Haass can aspire to.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/africa/03/30/libya.war/Libya's opposition said its fighters are executing a "tactical withdrawal" from a swath of territory they once controlled, a move that comes as Gadhafi's forces relentlessly pound them.
Col. Ahmed Bani, speaking at a news conference in the opposition capital of Benghazi on Wednesday, said his forces are being outgunned by the superior military power of loyalists, spared the wrath of coalition airstrikes.
They have been pushed eastward over the last two days after rebels took Brega, Ras Lanuf and Bin Jawad and reached a town just east of Sirte.
Rebel forces have now lost Bin Jawad and the key oil town of Ras Lanuf and are backed up to the Brega area, Bani said. Ajdabiya, which is east of Brega, will be prepared as a "defense point" if the withdrawal continues farther east, he said.
absolutely..Trump doesn't want to go to the Republican Establishment -so he looks to people of excellence. It got run over by the sensationalist non-story that's dominating the news [and the JPP Current Events feed], but the Tillerson hearing was pretty informative. He seems well-versed on global affairs and handles himself well. And he backed Rubio up lol, which needed to happen.
Tillerson also had a good stance on climate change: he said he didn't agree that AGW was a national security concern; and that the science didn't conform with the facts on the ground.
I'm liking the idea of businessmen running the country better all the time.
absolutely..Trump doesn't want to go to the Republican Establishment -so he looks to people of excellence.
Tillerson is outstanding from what I saw, and he definately shut up the barking Rubio..
McCain is too far gone down the road to war to be sane -but Tillerson can lose him and Graham and get he post.
Tillerson is very well versed -he looks to be an outstanding source.
yeppers..he's populist, not an ideologue.I agree.
The climate change exchange was informative because Tillerson didn't totally blow it off; but he clearly signaled that he didn't have an ideological dog in the fight. Even most republicans politicians will make the obligatory nod towards the god of climate change because they fear the political consequences of questioning the dogma and being labeled a denier.
But Tillerson isn't a politician---he's not even from the Beltway. I doubt it's a coincidence that he's not.
Trump seems to favor pragmatism over ideology.
yeppers..he's populist, not an ideologue.
I like he's looking at everything from that p.o.v. - it's a refreshing change from Obama's slavish progressive agenda
