Okay, so we all know that Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa went postal in Boulder, CO grocery store this pas Monday. He killed a bunch of people before getting shot by the cops and surrendering. So far, the cops are saying it doesn't look like a American got "radicalized" by Islamic extremism. Instead, according to family and friends, the guy seems to be 1 brick shy of a load. The kicker is just 4 days before junior went off the very ban on the weapon he used was over turned by the district courts.
Now on one end you have the gun control folk and Democratic majority banging the table saying, "See! Get these damned things (assault weapons, i.e. the AR-15 type rifles) out of general population circulation! Ban them! "
On the other end you have the 2nd Amendment folk and Republican majority banging the table saying, "See! Muslim extremists/terrorists are here! It's not the guns, it's them!"
My take is this: If junior had no criminal record or official record of psychological problems, a 7 day waiting period for a background check wouldn't have made a difference. He would have every legal right under Colorado law to buy that weapon. You can only go far in trying to legislate against crazy.
BUT
Once again, the weapon of choice for mass shooters is the AR-15....a sweet little versatile weapon that does EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS DESIGNED FOR....ASSAULTING AND KILLING PEOPLE WITH ACCURACY (as much as the user can apply). Now people will debate until doomsday as to whether the same amount of damage could have been done with other types of rifles or a handgun (or handguns).
BUT
We will NEVER know if the AR-15 is available to ANYONE, ANY TIME, ANY WHERE.

So your suggestion is that everyone should carry an AR 15 with them at all times .. just in case? Does not carrying an AR 15 with you at all times determine you to be ‘disarmed?’ Tell me you and your children would be safer with multiple untrained people firing AR 15s all around you without knowing where the shots by the criminal are even coming from .. as such was the case in the recent murders?

No. It's mainly the deterrent effect: IF a bad guy knows everyone is unarmed, that's to his advantage. If he doesn't know because citizens may be armed, that's a deterrent. Same thing with homeowners. People are fucking stupid to rob a house at night in Texas unless they know for a fact the residents are unarmed. Where would that be?
A secondary reason is that a person with a sidearm stands a better chance of surviving an active shooter than someone with nothing. As a former roommate in flight school once said after we'd watched a horror movie, "If I was him I'd be wishing real hard for a 45". I knew he meant that the guy was stupid for being unarmed in such a situation but it was funny to me at the time.
People have a right of self-defense. It, like life itself, is an inalienable right that can't be physically taken away except by an oppressor.
Regardless, I believe the right is still there. Do you?

you need a better source. there is no way, no matter the modification, that an AR-15 is going to fire 15 rounds a second
Not to mention the weight of a thousand rounds (about 28 pounds not counting the magazines).

I own two guns, which are kept in my house UNLOADED, which means there is no chance my granddaughter will be accidentally killed by one, WHICH HAPPENS A LOT. I ALSO OWN TWO DOGS, WHICH MEANS NO ONE IS GOING TO SNEAK UP ON ME, AND ALLOWS ME TIME TO LOAD A GUN, IF, AND ONLY IF, THAT BECOMES NECCESSARY, AND GIVES MY WIFE TIME TO ALERT NEIGHBORS OR CALL 911.
I DO NOT LIVE IN FEAR OF LIVING OR BEING ATTACKED BY MONSTERS OR ZOMBIES, AND I HAVE LIVED IN URBAN ENVIRONMENTS, WHERE I CHOOSE TO LIVE, ALL MY LIFE.

Agreed. I was being lazy; I didn't want to do the math on 900 rounds when 1000 rounds was easily Googled. BTW, it appears the going rate is $600/1000 but that goes up and down a bit as you know.

As I stated, I support your right to own guns and to defend yourself brother, but unless you’re being attacked by an army, I don’t see how an AR helps, or is even needed.
I think it comes down to one’s philosophy about civic and national responsibility. Knowing the perpetual tragedy of mass shootings in America caused by weapons of mass murder, makes MY decision not to own one real easy, but that’s just me. Looking at reports of school children being slaughtered and blown into tiny pieces makes my opposition to these weapons a nobrainer. Knowing that guns in the home kills more children, spouses, and people known to the shooter than intruders, makes me hesitant to to celebrate having a gun in my home or gun ownership at all.
AND A CONFESSION, knowing that guns kill more people attempting suicide than any other means of choice is something to seriously consider, given that I stood on the verge of it when my son was murdered. Nearly 50.000 Americans commit suicide in the US almost every year. Damn near an epidemic, and save my wife throwing the bullets in a lake, and kind and thoughtful words from two posters on this board, one being a Republican, I could have been one of those statistics. For me, this conversation is personal.
