And what does this familial support look like? I can only comment on what I would do. I would tell the kid first and repeatedly that I loved them. Then I would tell them the consequences of this very adult public declaration they are making at the tender age of 14, because the reality is, most CHILDREN of that age are miniature rabid assholes who will wound you without a second thought and not even know what they’re doing.

I would also tell them that if they make it to adulthood, 99% of the people around them will not give a rat’s ass what they do with their genitalia or who they do it with, they just want you to keep your mouth shut around children. And finally, I would tell them that regardless of my love for them, and the intense pain I would suffer if THEY were harmed in anyway because of their sexual orientation, I would not compromise my moral or political beliefs at their behest.
