Given that there were lawyers advising him before hand not to do it, then months of polite negotiations, then less polite negotiations, then a legal subpoena requiring him to hand the documents back... Only a fool would not know after almost two years of being told that it was coming to a warrant being served.
That being said, trump is a fool, so he may not have known. Even Stone admits that trump only figured out what was coming "several days ahead of time", and not the over a year that a sane person would have known.
