Swedish military will be a NATO force multiplier

Thanks Vlad!

25 April 2022 - Sweden and Finland agree to apply for NATO membership

Swedish armed forces are the 12th most powerful in Europe, and the 31st most powerful in the world

One little problem... Right now, most of Sweden's military hardware is not NATO compatible. For example, the Gripen in Swedish service uses Jet A for fuel versus NATO standard JP 8 and JP 4. That little difference showed up back when the Swedes sent some jets to Italy to help in the Libyan revolution. They sat at a NATO airfield unused because they couldn't use the fuel available. Commercial Jet A had to be trucked in just to allow the planes to fly home.

While the engines can be swapped out, that's going to cost Sweden some serious money. It's going to take Sweden a decade or more to move to NATO standard equipment and munitions once they join. Finland is in the same situation. Even the Eastern European ex-Warsaw Pact nations like Poland, are still trying to shed non-standard ex-Soviet military equipment in favor of stuff that meets NATO's standards for compatibility.

Putin started the war. He is Invader and aggressor. It's up to him to stand down. No Ukrainian troops are in Russia, nor did they invade Russia.

Putin made the biggest mistake of his life, and now Ukraine, NATO, and the EU are going to ensure Putin's Russia is economically and militarily weakened so they no longer pose a threat to their neighbors as long as Putin is in power.

Biden initiated the war. Biden owns it. It's NATO's proxy war against Russian/EU commercial collaboration. Biden has won that round- but he threw Ukraine under the bus to achieve it. The Russians will want to turn Ukraine into a fair exchange- and they'll be justified in doing so.

One lesson leaned from the war in Ukraine, is Russia would not stand a chance against NATO in a land war?!! They would have to fallback on nukes?!!

NATO's armies are better equipped and trained too?!! It would be hard to destroy cities in NATO countries using conventional weapons, like in Ukraine?!! I just glad, Trump is not president doing this war in Ukraine, and that Le Pen in France lost the election too?!! We have to make sure we keep Trump or a Trumpian like person out of the white-house too?!! NATO is stronger with U.S.?!!

I don't care about Libya.

If notorious war criminal Vlad Putin makes a move, it will be against the Baltic states or Poland, which were traditional Russian empire vassal states.

The well equipped and well trained Swedish air force is a NATO force multiplier and deterent in the Baltic theater.

You're not simply a liar, Cypress, you're also a loud-mouthed fool.

NATO member pledges to block Sweden and Finland's candidacy
Zagreb plans to put its foot down, the Croatian president said

Finland and Sweden joining NATO is “very dangerous charlatanry” and amounts to provoking Russia, Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said on Tuesday. Zagreb will refuse to ratify their membership until the US and EU pressure the neighboring Bosnia-Herzegovina into guaranteeing ethnic Croats their basic voting rights, Milanovic added.

“As far as I’m concerned, they can get into NATO, they can poke the rabid bear in the eye with a pen,” Milanovic told reporters in Zagreb on Tuesday.

“However, until the electoral law issue in Bosnia-Herzegovina is resolved, until the Americans, the English, the Germans – if they can and want to – compel Sarajevo and Bakir Izetbegovic to update the electoral law in the next six months and grant Croats their elementary rights, the Sabor must not ratify anyone’s admission to NATO,” he added, referring to the Croatian parliament.

NATO cannot admit new members without the approval of the current ones, Milanovic pointed out, adding that he sees Croatia’s role at this moment as “a historic silver bullet.”

“Let the US president or secretary of state hear this now. Let’s see what they can do for Croatia. I’ve had enough of them ignoring and neglecting a NATO and EU member, and sidelining Croatia,” Milanovic said, adding that if the US and its Western European allies want the two Scandinavian countries in NATO, “they will have to listen to Croatia.”

Not outside their own territory they aren't. Sweden's military is not set up for operations away from home. That makes sense when you are a neutral on your own. As part of NATO, they'd have to adopt NATO standard munitions and logistics along with the equipment to use them. This is so they can fight anywhere within the NATO alliance and have supplies available. That won't happen instantly, and until it does, Sweden's military is of limited value outside Sweden.

They have about as many fighters as an aircraft carrier and zero actual battle experience.

It doesn't take a decade to change military strategy and doctrine.

The Grippen fighter is reputed to have a range of two thousand miles. That is easily within range of Poland, Estonia, Finland.

“The Swedish Armed Forces currently serves in more than twenty countries. Our missions overseas primarily involve peacekeeping troops providing support to security efforts. Some 360* Swedish military personnel currently serve abroad. Missions vary in size, some only involve a few observers or advisers, whereas other missions involve hundreds of deployed military personnel. At home, our rapid reaction units are always prepared to deploy to any part of the country.”

I hope anyone reading your post clicks the link and actually sees what they are doing. It makes TA Gardners point perfectly. Nice job!

Good grief. Is that what you were told to think? Biden has no part in this war. It is all Putin's. NATO did not attack Russia. Ukraine did not attack Russia. Biden is helping them with munitions. Lots of countries are. That is because Putin is trying to take over a neutral neighbor based on lies. If Putin walked through Ukraine, where would he be now?

It's ferry range is 2000 miles. It's combat radius is about 250. That is, out, fight, and return. That might be stretched to about 500 miles if you hang a bunch of drop tanks on it.

Small units of ground troops serving mostly under the UN flag doesn't equate to putting a large force on the ground and supplying it.

Performance
The Gripen can fly at a maximum speed of 2,470km/h. The combat radius and ferry range of the aircraft are 800km and 3,200km respectively. Its service ceiling is 15,240m

I don't care about Libya.
of course not. bunch of African Berbers and Arabs -who cares?
we destroyed their country with the same western arrogance NATO/west uses against Russia

Libya is still suffering but cant fight back. Russian security concerns are treated like a joke
Your way always leads to war
More NATO expansion will eventually force Putin to use tactical nukes
Then you'll care but refuse to acknowledge we forced that just as we forced a hostile Uk on Russia's border

Used the N-word huh? That is what Ruskies do when they are losing. They try and scare every out of helping with the nuke threat. Want to end the problem, pull the fuck out and go back to Moscow. It will be a long time before Russia is trusted again, if ever.

This is a great idea. As long as NATO gets serious. NATO was conceived as a bulwark against communist russia. And when communism supposedly fell in russia, NATO went on a 30 year long celebratory bender while russia squatted there like a toad waiting for the 2nd coming of stalin. Enter putin. I'm beginning to think that if we ever get this mess in Ukraine straightened out, we should seriously think about getting them into NATO and arming them to the teeth.

We have to face the fact that we might have to fight the fuck head someday soon, and I'm tired of 9/11s and Pearl Harbors.

I've spoken to some of my Swedish friends on this.....they are not happy, because in their view NATO has been living up to the paranoia that Russia has about them since the fall of the USSR. Also, they don't like the fact that they will now have a nuke bulls eye on their backs with this deal. But, if the majority of Swedes are for it, that's that.

Putin lost the benefit of the doubt, his word cannot be trusted, and he now has a consistent established record of invading his neighbors.

Putin's Russia needs to be economically and militarily weakened so they cannot pose a tangible threat to it's neighbors as long as Putin holds power.

Europe and western liberal democracy have to man the fortifications as long as this war criminal holds sway in Moscow.

It gives me no pleasure to say that because the Russian people have great potential. Until about 2012, democratic institutions and practices were taking root.

Some Russians think the year 2022 will be the Inflection point of another lost century for Russia, the way 1917 was the pivotal year for a disastrous 20th century.
