what abour morale? Also oliver stone was on bill maher and he was talking iabout when he was in vietnam, that smoking weed was the only thing that helped calm soldiers down and give them a sense of peace admist all the chaos. I know we are talking about tabaco, but same deal.

I think that forcing smokers to quit in the middle of a deployment could put some lives at risk. The withdrawal symptoms are bad, and it would effect their mind in battle. Possibly they could supply them with nicotine patches instead.

Yeah, I don't see the point of forcing them to quit. It's not good for morale. They may treat them like property, but that doesn't mean we should help them do it.

I'm on the fence with this one. If anything they should limit it to new recruits. The ones that smoke now are addicted and its not easy to quit when you've been doing it for decades. Its definitely good for them to quit, but a lot of those programs don't work for everyone.

per cnn, smoking costs the va $6 billion per year and the pentagon estimates that smoking costs the military $460 million per year

1 in 3 military types smoke while only 1 in 5 civilian types smoke

nicotine rules

ever wonder how far the smell of smoke carries in a combat zone or how far a lit cigarette can be seen at night

Winterborn,

This isnt a job performance issue. Or an overweight issue. For members of the military that have to perform at a certain physical level, smoking does not inhibit them. Wake up and run 4 miles every morning and still be a smoker, then you can talk about someone else's physical performance or lack thereof because you light up. It doesnt cause a problem.

This is a lot to do about nothing. The majority of members of the military enlist for 4 years and get out. The second block are enlisted for 8 years and get out. If you were 18 when you enlisted and got out at 22 or 26... and youre going to the VA at 60 for smoking related illness's... thats what 34 to 38 years of smoking while you werent even in the military. Clearly knocking off 4 years out of 26 isnt going to matter, one reason this is a tard fantasy.

Currently there is a ban on discussing the sexual positions you had with this smokin hot drunk lot lizard from the bar last night. Anyone care to guess how many officers or senior enlisted personnel ever enforce that one.... or encourage it, lol?

This is a stupid idea, with no hope of it ever being enacted or enforced.

I think I am with LadyT on this one. phase the smoking out and do not cut off the smokers in the middle of combat.

The military does seem to attract those types that tend to smoke though. I mean why worry about your long term health when you stand a good chance of dying tomorrow?
The poor also tend to be smokers more than ivy league types.

Thanks Epi and iced for helping me to clarify my thoughts on this one.

The Air Force has taken a firm stand on smoking by banning it during Basic Training and Tech. School. Personally, I'm amazed when people go through 12+ weeks of abstinance and then go back to smoking again...

Obviously a smoking ban wouldn't affect me.
