The US Constitution was a secondary outgrowth of America's PRIMARY founding document - which was the "Declaration of Independence."


The "Declaration of Independence" was essentially a MORAL document, and Jefferson openly admitted that he took all of the most important moral principles that are written in the "Declaration from the work of an English Enlightenment political philosopher and theologian named John Lock. In particular Locke's text: Second Treatise on Government (1689).


Locke was a life-long, devout Protestant and the Natural Rights that the "Declaration" lists including the Natural Rights to: Life, Liberty, the pursuit of happiness, private property, Revolution, etc are corallaries of Locke's theory of Christian "Natural (moral) Law".


This Natural law is Divinely ordained by God (the Biblical God).


So, despite what the Constitution says, America was founded on purely Christian moral precepts. From 4th July, 1776 America was implicity/tacitly - and - "for all intents and purposes" - a Christian republic.

You're correct the Declaration of Independence "was essentially a MORAL document". It is also a revolutionary document but it isn't a foundational document for a national government. That document is The Constitution.
