Shoe in the face, he kinda deserved it!

Is it just me, or does that dumb deer-in-head-lights look never seem to leave Bush even as he's having shit thrown at him?

I was amazed at how fast Bush was able to react... I would have expected him to just sit there like he was reading "my pet goat" or something.

I don't know he seemed to respond pretty quick to that. Looked like he blocked the second one too.

One of his cooler moments.

This endcap is really the most poetic incident for the waining days of the Presidency of GWB.

1) There is a difference between 'protest' and 'assault'

2) Had that been Saddam... he (a) would not likely have dared to throw something at Saddam and (b) if he had, would now be 'disappeared'

1) I understand that.

2) What's your point? What does that have to do with anything? He didn't throw anything at the Iraqi leader. Had it been the Hussein regime he probably would have been heralded as a great Iraqi standing up to the American devil.

Very good point, had Saddam been in power this guy would have gotten a ticker tape parade and a cush job paying millions.

And another thing, he wasn't charged with assault (hard to do when the victim claims not to have been fearful of harm) but he has been charged with insulting the Iraqi state.

Yay, freedom!

I didn't say he was charged with assault. I am also not shocked that Bush didn't come out and say he was afraid. Though it would have been funny if he had.

I would imagine if someone here started throwing things at a foreign head of state, they too would be arrested. Freedom does not mean you can do whatever you want without consequences. It most certainly doesn't mean you can throw things at other people whenever you feel they deserve it.

Whatever, guy. You had Damocles trumpeting the free speech nonsense in the first place. Now the shoe-thrower is getting charged with insulting the Iraqi state, which sound a whole hell of a lot like the complete opposite of freedom of speech (and by a journalist no less).

again, it is NOT freedom of speech to throw things at people like a child having a tantrum.

1) What is it? Is it a crime? If so, which?

2) I am more pointing out the difference between Damo's "freedom of speech" defense of the Iraq War (and that's really what that is up there) and the concept of the crime of "insulting the Iraqi state." There is a conflict there, no?

3) You betray your cultural ignorance in describing the episode as "behaving like a child having a tantrum." Were the people that pelted the statue of Saddam with their shoes behaving like children having a tantrum?

1) I agree it is not assault unless Bush states he was in fear for his life, which as President he will of course not do.

2) No, there is no conflict. Had the guy stood up and stated/shouted his feeling towards Bush and they charged him with that, then I would agree there would be a conflict. But when you start throwing things like a child at a foreign head of state (or anyone for that matter) then you are indeed embarassing yourself, your profession and your country. That said, I would like to see what 'punishment' this 'crime' carries. Personally anything more than a fine and a short stay in jail (just until Bush is gone) would be excessive for what occurred.

3) Cultural ignorance? LOL. What a stretch. There is a huge difference between pelting a STATUE and throwing things at a live person.

I think that here it probably would be assault.

The story I initially read about this incident explained that in Iraq, turning the soles of one's shoes toward someone is a grave insult. Throwing the shoes at Bush was intended to be an extreme insult to him.

Frankly, I'm more concerned about the prospect of Russian warships visiting Cuba, this also in today's news. I'm trying to imagine what message Putin is trying to send here.

So, the fact that the crime of insulting the Iraqi state exists poses no conflict with the concept of freedom of speech as we understand it? Please. I'm not even going to dignify that tripe with a response.

And yes, it is cultural ignorance. Ignorance you apparently enjoy.

Imagine it being a crime to "insult the American State". We are close with the attempts to ban burning a flag.
