She might would have voted for the President, but based on what she has said in the past and the people who know her, her politics are NOT liberal.

It is a very socially conservative religion.

Agree. My husband has relatives who are JWs. If they aren't conservative, they tend to leave the religion.

Having said that, I don't think they all would agree with Williams' comment. But many would.

Have you ever had a JW or Mormon knock on your door and want to talk about religion? It's great fun to answer the door in your underwear and talk to them.

This shouldn't be political. It bothers me. Last night I saw a feminist I like a lot tweeting away about how we (white feminists ) need to be careful not to criticize her too much and after all would we criticize a white woman for saying this?

see that type of stuff is bullshit. criticism and thought should never be stifled and silenced. It probably says a lot about this person that she assumes that others may curb what they want to say (probably because she does the same on occasion).

Actually they are FAR more versed in the bible than anyone else. They know every line, every phrase .. and they live by it.

Not your normal small 'c' christian.

If you want to test what you believe about Christianity, talk to JW's.

ROTFLMAO, I have a friend who is Mormon, she is a liberal.. but at odds with the church over that. She was single when I first met her and was no prude (still no drinking or penetration of the sexual organs) but we dated a little and she was great fun.

Now she is married to a Mormon man and wears the silly underwear.

My brother and his family were JW's ,, and once my mother and I had to fly to California to get power of attorney over my nephew because my brother refused to get him a blood transfusion that he desperately needed. My brother has since died .. and I will always love him .. but they don't exist in the real world.

There is a long history in feminism of exclusion of black women, appropriation of their work, etc...so I understand the concern, but I am in a place personally where I just don't feel that is relevant to this sort of situation (rape apologia and support of rape culture). Another one being when Whoopi Goldberg said Polanski hadn't committed "rape rape". I am well beyond open to black intellectual feminist writers, and often prefer their writings not to mention their company, so I just can't get all sensitive over this kind of thing. I guess it comes down to, my conscience is clear.

When Goldberg made that comment about Polanski, it made me realize that the belief that Polanski hadn't committed "rape rape" was very widespread. One of my very best friends said to me that it wasn't really rape it was statuary, and he is a legit feminist and very well read, and I started crying. I got so frustrated that it came out that way, in tears. He was shocked and then I asked him to please read the actual transcript of what he did, it was rape regardless of how old she was, it would have been rape if she was 30. He fucking drugged her and then raped and sodomized her and the whole time she was saying no and crying. I mean, that's fucking rape rape. And he did read it and he apologized and said he had never known. That is rape culture, a bunch of idiots made excuses for Polanski and that it wasn't "really rape" became common knowledge. You can't let shit like this go. That's why I don't let stuff like what Williams said go. Or anyone else.

Good for you.

Excellent insight.

That being said, much of what passes as 'black intellectual feminist writing' .. I consider dangerous and detrimental to black society .. with Toni (Bill Clinton is the first black president) Morrison among the worst of the lot.

I think I remember a long debate you had with Tiana about that. Actually I am referring to black feminist thinking and writing, which brings an entire other perspective of race and class to feminism. You can't read The Feminine Mystique and Ain't I A Woman and come away not realizing how little you knew after reading just the first. I think that many white feminists had not addressed race and class at all and it was very insular. I mean, if you were not a well-educated, well-off white woman trapped in 1950, what the hell would the Feminine Mystique mean to you? That's actually what made me go out and read black intellectuals generally. I figured if I hadn't understood feminism until Iread black women, maybe I didn't know too much about history by just reading mostly white-written history books. And I was right.

:) I think I love you.

You educated me on the details. I had no idea. Keep talking, it is important to educate people.
