Tennis champion Serena Williams is facing an angry backlash after suggesting that a teenage rape victim ‘‘shouldn’t have put herself in that position’’ and was ‘‘lucky’’ not to have been further injured in a crime that transfixed the US.

The world's top-ranked women’s player questioned why the 16-year-old victim, who was raped by two high school footballers at a party in Steubenville in August last year, was so drunk at the time that she couldn’t remember what had happened.
I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position.
In an interview with US magazine Rolling Stone, Williams said: ‘‘Obviously, I don't know, maybe she wasn't a virgin, but she shouldn't have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that's different."

The Rolling Stone profile on Williams, who recently won the French Open and is currently on a 31-match winning streak, has not been posted on the magazine’s website.

However, an excerpt of the article, written by Stephen Rodrick, has been published on the sports website Deadspin.

In the article, Rodrick describes how he was watching television with Williams when news of the Steubenville rape trial came on the screen.

‘‘Do you think it was fair, what they got?’’ Williams reportedly asked.

‘‘They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you — don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

Next up, the liberal non-apology apology, “I’m sorry if anyone was offended....”

She's not a liberal.

This shouldn't be political. It bothers me. Last night I saw a feminist I like a lot tweeting away about how we (white feminists ) need to be careful not to criticize her too much and after all would we criticize a white woman for saying this? Well, fuck yeah. I would. I am not by-your-leaving for any asshole who says shit like this, doesn't anyone who knows me know that? I don't give a shit what color she is, which gender, what her politics are, she's a fucking moron.

Just another reason why I will never talk to those pencil necked geeks in their white shirts and black ties when they come around to proselytize... Although, if the truth be known, I haven't seen a lot of them roaming the streets of my city in Mexico. There ARE, however, lots of weird german mennonites who wear heavy blue jean bib overalls, thick plaid flannel shirts, straw cowboy hats and try to sell me homemade cheese. I don't talk to them either. ;)

Yep. I had no idea. A very rare occasion here where Superfreak actually posted relevant information that cleared something up.

Poor Wacko has other things that still won't clear up... His professor told him he was special, now wacko finds out he wasn't the only one. Still taking the acyclovir Wacko?

You should....that's some seriously good cheese they are selling.

She lives in the next neighborhood over from mine. I've met her three times. I know several people who know her well. I know the attorney who represented her in a big trial a couple years ago.

I have a good feel for her politics.

The only thing Public I know about is an interview where she states that she does not believe that the government should provide a safety net, later today ill try to look for a link to that interview. Today is a big day at my office and I just MIGHT be involved in a drunken celebration this afternoon.

Politics in Williams’ case has everything to do with religion. Or more specifically, her lack of politics. As I stated above, Jehovah’s Witnesses are discouraged from participating in any nationalist activity–and that includes voting. But if she did vote, Williams made it clear who would have her support:

I’m a Jehovah’s Witness, so I don’t get involved in politics. We stay neutral. We don’t vote. So I’m not going to necessarily go out and vote for [Barack Obama]. I would if it wasn’t for my religion.
