Tennis champion Serena Williams is facing an angry backlash after suggesting that a teenage rape victim ‘‘shouldn’t have put herself in that position’’ and was ‘‘lucky’’ not to have been further injured in a crime that transfixed the US.
The world's top-ranked women’s player questioned why the 16-year-old victim, who was raped by two high school footballers at a party in Steubenville in August last year, was so drunk at the time that she couldn’t remember what had happened.
The Rolling Stone profile on Williams, who recently won the French Open and is currently on a 31-match winning streak, has not been posted on the magazine’s website.
However, an excerpt of the article, written by Stephen Rodrick, has been published on the sports website Deadspin.
In the article, Rodrick describes how he was watching television with Williams when news of the Steubenville rape trial came on the screen.
‘‘Do you think it was fair, what they got?’’ Williams reportedly asked.
‘‘They did something stupid, but I don’t know. I’m not blaming the girl, but if you’re a 16-year-old and you’re drunk like that, your parents should teach you — don’t take drinks from other people. She’s 16, why was she that drunk where she doesn’t remember? It could have been much worse. She’s lucky. Obviously I don’t know, maybe she wasn’t a virgin, but she shouldn’t have put herself in that position, unless they slipped her something, then that’s different.”

Next up, the liberal non-apology apology, “I’m sorry if anyone was offended....”
