It's not just Syria; Obama's uncalled for sanctions on el-Sisi pretty much forced Egypt to turn to Moscow for weapons. Weapons trade led to commercial trade, and now Moscow is supplying tech for new nuclear plants.

That was a gross violation of 40 YEARS of US policy to shut Russia out of the ME -
Obama's fecklessness undid it in a few years.

Putin is emboldened. Syria is going to stay a Russian client state, no matter the outcome of the Syrian Civil war.
But Putin has also tied into the Shi'a Crescent, and is now an international partner ( where applicable) with Iran.

This is what happens when you don't deal with Putin..he finds power vacuums , or moves in on existing alliances.

Trump is going to Saudi Arabia to shore up Sunni support -again another Obama dereliction.

It would be better for the US to engage with Putin on every level ( including Cold War 2.0)

More importantly Hillary initiated "friends of Syria", an attempt to garnish international support for "Assad must go"
It only weakened Assad - it allowed the "Islamists" to flourish.
It was another Hillary attempt at US interventionism ( on the cheap)..

Trump got sucked into the missile strikes- but by now Russia is firmly in charge

17 agencies agree that they were given information about Russian interference from three agencies, three agencies agree the information was shared from one agency to the other two, one agency agrees they got the information from a private company.......nobody agrees who paid the private company to come up with the information......Hilliary agrees she did not get her money's worth because she still lost........
