Kashoggi was a Saudi National. Just because he was a media darling doesn’t—and shouldn’t, mean we throw the baby out with the foreign policy bath water. If I’m a Saudi blogger who is at odds with the Saudi government one of the first things I’m going to do is apply for US citizenship—because citizenship would afford some protection. For some reason Kashoggi didn’t do that. He’d probably still be alive if he did.
As I’ve mention before, Daniel Pearle was an actual US citizen and journalist who was beheaded on live video. And for some odd reason it didn’t create the same media outrage.
