Karl Rove: ‘Trump lacks the focus or self-discipline to do the basic work required of a president’

Karl Rove, a former senior adviser to President George W. Bush, slammed President Trump on Wednesday, saying that the real estate mogul "lacks the focus or self-discipline to do the basic work required of a president."

"His chronic impulsiveness is apparently unstoppable and clearly self-defeating," Rove wrote in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal. "Mr. Trump may have mastered the modes of communication, but not the substance, thereby sabotaging his own agenda."

Rove took particular aim at a series of tweets launched by Trump on Monday that appeared to undermine his Justice Department's argument for an executive order barring citizens of six Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S.

Trump's insistence in the tweets that the U.S. has already implemented "extreme vetting" measures on travelers from certain countries, according to Rove, reveals that president's own lack of understanding about his administration's work.

"On May 8, a federal appeals court asked a Justice Department lawyer if the administration was drafting new vetting standards. He responded: 'We’ve put our pens down,'" Rove wrote.

"Mr. Trump seems to think the pens are down because the new vetting standards are written. Meantime, his lawyers say the government hasn’t started working on them."

Rove also blasted Trump's argument for withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate accord last week. At issue for Rove wasn't the decision to pull out of the agreement itself – he applauded it. But, he said, Trump failed to explain the decision in a compelling way, calling the announcement "meandering, thin and dour."

"Mr. Trump has figured out how to tweet his way around the mainstream media," he wrote. "Yet by disregarding basic fact checking, he is deepening the already considerable doubts Americans have about his competence and trustworthiness."

Rove's simpleton, Bush the lesser, at least had the discipline to take orders so he could somewhat appear to be competent...
Trump is unable to pull that off...

No new insights here. Rove is just being honest and saying what everyone, including Trump supporters, already know.

rove is evil

but he can still see the fact that trumpy is stabbing the republican party to death

Liberals have hit rock bottom when they start caring about what Karl Rove says

LOL - like you wouldn't have been all over it if ANYONE on the left had criticized Obama or Hillary like this. I'm sure you actually were w/ Hillary, since plenty on the left did criticize her.

Wow, I did not see that coming. Rove is as hyper-partisan a Republican loyalist as they get.

There must be something so troubling about Drumpf, incompetence so unprecedented, that even a lifelong loyal Republican uber-partisan hack can see it.

Irrespective of Rove, one thing we can always count on: Drumpf's message board fan boys here will always, without question, and with undying loyalty and love, continue to grovel on their knees at the Orange Clowns feet. Defending his every blunder. Worshipping him, even as he undermines American's alliances and global leadership. Abandoning every core principle they ever held, to take a bullet for their Master and Clown King.

with republican lies which you bought into

tell us why you attacked Hilary during the election

what were your grounds

you never gave anything real

I gave EVERYTHING real. Hillary, like her husband, is one of the most politically expedient public-office seekers in history. She had NO COHERENT MESSAGE - even when I asked you what it was, you gave a generic, lame response about traditional Dem policies. Hillary also has issues w/ the truth, as is well documented.

Beyond all of that, she voted FOR the Iraq Resolution. She & other Democrats were the last line of defense for the left when it came to that war, and they took the coward's way out. Your rationalization that "Bush lied to her" is pathetic. We all know what Bush was doing. Why didn't she? Are you saying she's ignorant? No one who is against war & that war in particular should be engaged in the kind of apologist excuse-making that you habitually do for her. It is so sad. You are NOT anti-war, and you cannot claim to be an opponent of the Iraq War by excusing that vote. You are just someone who sees a (D) and will make any excuse you can, no matter how egregious the offense.

The fact that you call me some kind of phony or try to imply that I lack principles is the height of irony. You will compromise on ANY principle, as long as it is a Democrat.

Kasich supported it too

you liked him

her message was there the media barely covered her speaches

they covered in full every trumpy one

its a LIE to say she had no message

Kasich didn't vote for the war - and he's an honest person, who was honest about his support. He didn't try to toe some line to appease his constituency and try to show he was "tough" as well. And he would have been a good President, though I disagree w/ him on many issues.

Hillary had zero message. I watched her speeches. When she talked policy, it was standard boilerplate rhetoric. She had no new ideas for jobs or the economy, for the environment, for foreign policy. She was an empty suite, and she tried to run on Trump's negatives & run out the clock. It was one of the most pathetic campaigns I have seen - and MANY on the left and in the party agree with that.

because he could not vote for it

he backed it in public in every way

she backed the right things for the economy

the ideas that the republicans fought under Obama

new is meaningless fool
