So I've voted for the SF Mayor for the past 18 years and they've all been democrats. So am I compassionate because of that or am I judged only how I vote nationally?
 
So when I when I walk to work BAC and pass a half dozen to a dozen homeless folk can I tell them I'm compassionate and care about them because I vote Democratic locally? Or can I not do that because I don't nationally?

Obamacare is shit (especially since Trump and Republicans began actively sabotaging it), but what you had before was beyond garbage. Republicans V Democrats: The Difference

One of the most interesting things to see is the difference between the reactions of Democrats and Republicans to Trump and Obama. The reaction shows why one side has been successful, managing to reduce the Democrats to their lowest level of power since the 1920s, and the other side has been flailing. *

Republicans

The republican reaction can be exemplified with the famous quote of Mitch McConnell. He said he would make sure that Obama would be a one term president. Liberals and Democrats hated that but in reality Republicans are supposed to help other Republicans win. This is doubly true for the majority leader who is supposed to increase the size of his coalition.

By acknowledging that Obama would be a one term president Republicans acknowledged their loss and prepared for the next election. They did an autopsy to find out what was wrong and attempted to win enough other races in other levels to increase the size of their coalitions. Please note that the autopsy was dumb and came to all the wrong conclusions but at the very least the attempt was made. A defeat for the Republicans would have been the Democrats winning the elections 4 and 8 years after Obama was elected.

There was a small faction of Republicans, which Trump was part of, which did not accept the loss and tried to have Obama removed before his time with the birther issue. The fact is they were a small faction without any political power. The ones who were actually planning the strategy of the party had accepted the loss.

Democrats

Democrats have still not accepted their loss to Trump. Having been told their whole lives that demographics is destiny and that Republicans would never win again without cheating they have not been able to emotionally process losing to President Trump. This prevents them from looking at the events of 2016 objectively and creating an autopsy like the Republicans did. Since they have not accepted the loss they focus on short term objectives like removing Trump from power as opposed to long term ones like restoring their party to power.*

We are not talking about a small faction like the birthers in the Republican party but rather the entire party. This means that all political strategy only looks at short term effects. Every scandal has to be played up as the one that will finally impeach Trump exhausting the populace and the credibility of the media. A loss for Democrats is if Trump makes it to the next election as the President. The danger is that by next election the Democrats would have exhausted their outrage machine by so much that no one will listen to them.*

One side uses cold calculation and logic while the other uses mass hysterics and we can see the results.

Heck, Dems never accepted the Gore loss, and Reps never accepted McCain or Romney losses. This is just a continuation of the division that is going on in our country, and it will make us fall flat on our self righteous faces if we don't stop.
We have to realize that we are being played by both parties and should come together as citizens, instead of constantly fighting and bickering.

Work for solutions. I.e. ACA. Instead of trying to get rid of the first serious attempt to better HC in America, they should take another look and try fixing the parts that don't work, instead of making it a partisan issue.
No one, absolutely no one should worry about needing care when they are ill, short term, long term, preexisting or not yet diagnosed.
We should never have to dish out for elective care, be it boob jobs or nose jobs or any other cosmetic surgery, with the exception of reconstructive surgeries after cancer or injury. We shouldn't have to pay for sex changes.
Everything else goes. I don't care if people smoke, drink, are in the sun too much or drive too fast. We have to take care of each other.

Entitlements
they should work out a system that eliminates fraud, so that more money is available for the truly needy. Just because someone lives in their mom's basement and has "issues" isn't a reason to receive funds.

Immigration
Ease the pathway for legal immigration, cut down on illegal immigration and take a good look at integration.

If we want to get somewhere, perhaps we should meet in the middle. Both sides have good intentions, but neither side wants to recognize that fact.We, as citizens, have to get off our party horse and responsibly elect those who are willing to do that, starting from the ground up.

I respect your points of view. I listen to what you have to say .. there is never much of anything to argue with, but there are things we could debate.

I agree with much of what you've said here, but only in a more perfect world. We don't exist in that world now, nor do I believe that human nature will ever allow us to live there. That is particularly true in America. There is a decided difference between what I want the world to look like then what it really is. It is my responsibility to act according to what is.

We all come from different places, we all have different perspectives that shape our politics and view of society. I can respect that and even enjoy spirited, sometimes profanity-laden conversations of opposing views. That's what friends sometimes do. :0) Doesn't mean we aren't still friends.

That being said, there are lines I won't cross, ignorance I won't suffer .. so I block that noise out and keep it moving.

Don't take things to personal .. block out the noise. Ignore is a gift form the Gods.

I don't consider myself a socialist but a humanitarian. Having traveled extensively, I came to the realization that people are more alike than we give them credit for...exceptions noted.
I look for the good in people and am ready to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. That includes our president. Having rallied for Bernie at the time, I now have to except the decision made by my fellow countrymen and women.

I voted for Ed Lee for Mayor. I voted for Gavin Newsom twice and for Willie Brown. Does that qualify me for being "compassionate" locally?
 
Democrats want a society based upon pluralism, rationality, education, science, merit and a broad and strong social safety net whereas Republicans want to be a country of ignorant superstitious menial serfs attending to the whims of the wealthy.

I want a society where if you don't have something I do you earn it instead of expecting taxpayers like me to provide it to you. No such thing as a safety net in today's society. It's a hammock for those too fucking lazy to do for themselves to lie in.

You are full of shit if you think a party that overwhelmingly supports affirmative action believes in a meritorious society. When you use race to benefit groups that if it were used to deny those groups something would be considered racist, that's not merit.
