Real Reason More Women Are Not Math Related

it is possible men and women's brains are wired just differently enough to cause a small disparity when it comes to being interested in and excelling in advanced math. but not enough for this huge gap. that comes down to eons of socialization and expectations and the human tendency to follow the path of least resistance. we know that IQ wise, and skill wise, there are plenty of women as brilliant and productive in these difficult fields as men, and that pretty much proves it is more of a socialization phenomenon than a DNA related phenomenon, much like the varying IQ results of different races...not enough to even worry about.

how about the reverse? are women just better at English than dudes? are they born with better cooking skills? are they superior to us at synchronized swimming? that is what matters!!
 
I think we're born with various talents and various things we are not so talented at, but culture/socialization can make a difference too. Most parents can tell you that from a young age they could see strengths and weaknesses in abilities in their kids. So if they notice that a son is struggling with things of a verbal nature, do they try harder to engage him in speaking and writing and reading, or focus on the athletics that he loves? If a daughter finds math baffling, do they get her extra help, or think "Meh, girls just aren't that good at math" and encourage her in other areas?
 
We have barely begun to scratch the surface of these factors

The differences will prove meaningless in the end

Think of the day that ONLY talent is the determiner


Mankind using the actual talents of all people without regard of the human packaging

I remember a nun telling us, girls aren’t good at math. I believe many of us believed her. My niece is brilliant at it. I’m glad the younger generations weren’t discouraged like my generation was.

I have never heard of any body of credible scientific genetic evidence that ties analytical thinking to gender.

The fact that there exist female mathematicians every bit the equal of male mathematicians argues against the premise of some fundamental genetic and gender-based handicap concerning analytical thinking.

Many social, cultural, and other intangible factors come into play in everyone's lives.

I personally have never seen the point of linking intellectual achievement to gender or skin color. Achievement is personal and individual. I am a white male, but have never felt I get to claim partial credit for the achievements of Albert Einstein because we share a Y chromosome. His achievement was his and his alone - it was not a credit to his gender or skin pigmentation.

My youngest daughter had learning disabilities (speech and reading) as a child. Yet even at age 2, you could verbally give her an arithmetic problem like "What is 27 plus 19?" and she would figure it out in her head. She took trig and calculus in h.s. for college credit, and aced them both. When she was 17 she informed me one day that the reason she excels so with numbers is that she sees them in colors. It's called grapheme-color synesthesia and is caused by a miswiring in the brain. When she would manipulate them via various mathematical operations, they changed colors. She thought everyone was that way until she ran across an article when she was writing a paper about differently-abled children. BTW, she overcame her language issues and has a masters in special education. She graduated summa cum laude even.

Our minds are amazing things.

OH but wait -- there's more! My middle daughter was and is simply brilliant at just about everything... language, math, foreign languages, music, art. But not athletics. Used to tease her that she had to avoid the Hallmark store at the mall or she'd owe them a paycheck for all the stuff she knocked over. She knew upper and lower case letters, and numbers up to 20, by the time she was 18 months old. She could read at age three. But at the end of fourth grade, she informed us that she was not going to get As any more because she wanted kids to like her and nobody did because they said she was "too smart." Peer pressure can be such a terrible thing. My dad had a talk with her and told her how he was born with a crippled leg. All he wanted was to play sports like his brother and the other boys. But since he couldn't he recognized that he did have one gift that they didn't have -- his mind -- so he developed that instead. It worked! She got straight As all the way through h.s. and now owns two college degrees as well.

Kids just need someone to believe in them so that they can believe in themselves, eh?

Isn't that strange? I'd heard of ppl with brain injuries having various synesthesias but that was a first. Turns out that although rare, it happens spontaneously. Interesting article:

From the article: "Some synesthetes hear, smell, taste or feel pain in color." I had that happen following a ruptured brain aneurysm. I could "see" the damaged areas in my head as blobs of color -- orange, green, yellow, purple. Eventually (thankfully!!!) that faded away and now a headache is just a headache.
