Well that was one of the most rapid backtracks in modern political history. Ayn Rand Paul now says he
supports the CRA. But, he still seems to be employing weasel words, and its unclear if he thinks congress absolutely did the right thing in 1964 by passing it.
In other news, Ayn Rand Paul opposes the Fair Housing Act. He clearly states that discrimination should be against the law in publicly funded institutions (schools, government jobs), but that all other forms of discrimination outside taxpayer-funded institutions are fine.
In a May 30, 2002, letter to the Bowling Green Daily News, Paul's hometown newspaper, he criticized the paper for endorsing the Fair Housing Act….
Rand Paul in '02: I may not like it, but 'a free society' will allow 'hate-filled groups to exclude people based on the color of their skin'
"The Daily News ignores," wrote Paul, "as does the Fair Housing Act, the distinction between private and public property. Should it be prohibited for public, taxpayer-financed institutions such as schools to reject someone based on an individual's beliefs or attributes? Most certainly. Should it be prohibited for private entities such as a church, bed and breakfast or retirement neighborhood that doesn't want noisy children? Absolutely not."
Do I think AsshatZombie, Bravo, and Good Luck (or whatever his name is) should be able to form their own whites-only Klan chapter, as long as it's a strictly private club, not engaged in interstate commerce, housing, employment, or business transactions?
Yep. Government can't regulate private behaviour.
Do I think the Feds have the authority to ban discrimination in housing, interstate commerce, employment, and business? Yes, and surprisingly I think most sane people do.
Good luck this fall Ayn Rand Paul!
(p.s., Mr. Paul, I would also consider a rapid backtrack on your position against communistic agricultural subsidies. I suspect that might not go over well in kentucky's farming communities)
