The Red Army's performance was pathetic in 1941 and 1942 because Stalin had purged the competent officer corps in the late 1930s, and Stalin refused to believe Hitler would invade leaving Soviet armed forces utterly unprepared to defend itself.
By 1943, the Red Army was generally well led, particularly by Field Marshal Zhukov, well equipped, and motivated.
German atrocities on Soviet civilians were well known, and it was widely understood that Nazi plans for Russia included ethnic cleansing because in Nazi racial theory, Russians were subhumans who could only serve the Reich as slaves at best.
The Russians knew they were in a war of annihilation, and that defeat was not an option. That was why the Red Army and Air Force were the first modern militaries to allow women to serve in combat units. They considered the conflict a war for their existence.

I don't see much difference between Hitler and Putin (or Stalin and Mao)......and after WWII Stalin continued to brutalize the Russian people until he died in 1953, only to be replaced by other autocrats, also intent on subjugating the Russian people, and the citizens of satellite states all through Eastern Europe. the Russian ruling class have been barbarians and kleptocrats since the revolution in 1917 (even worse than Czar Nicholas?)
