President Ron Paul? ...Okay!

I know a lot of people will see this and shake their heads, here Dixie goes again, jumping on the latest bandwagon, or in Paul's case, the Crazy Train. But with polls fluctuating like Joan Collins personality, it's difficult to determine who will ultimately win the GOP nomination, and as time goes on, Ron Paul is appearing more and more viable. Now, I don't believe this means he will win the nomination, but it is enough to make me consider, what if he did? Could I support Ron Paul over Barack Obama, and the answer is unequivocally YES!

I wouldn't be one of Paul's crazed fanatics, and I would still clearly admit Ron Paul is insane, but over Obama? Yeah, I'll take him for 4 years, it couldn't possibly be worse than 4 more years of Obama. Perhaps Congress would be able to offset Paul's more radical ideas, he wouldn't be able to dismantle all the stuff he has promised, and what little bit managed to get through the cracks, probably needs eliminating, so I could live with that. Relaxing drug laws... not a problem for me, we have bigger problems. Foreign policy is the one area he really scares me, but again, I think there are enough intelligent minds in Congress to mitigate any damage Paul could do, besides... we essentially have a neutered foreign policy now, so how would that be a change? At least Paul would be serious about scaling down the size and scope of government, and I suppose he would find a way to balance the budget, which would be nice for a change.

Some will say, well what about the economy and trade? And I don't know that Paul would help improve much there, but I am fairly certain we can't endure 4 more years of Obama economic policy. Others will add, what happens when Paul is attacked by the left, as we see them starting to do now, parsing out his speeches to make him appear to be a racist? My response is this.... GET USED TO THAT! It doesn't matter if the GOP nominates Gandhi, the left is going to orchestrate the biggest smear campaign in modern political history, on WHOEVER the nominee shall be, we can COUNT on that! You're going to hear how they are racists, were born racists, how they want to take over the world and kill all black people, and how they love only wealthy white people. You're going to hear how they cheated, lied, and bought their way to the top, how even their own family has disavowed them, how they would sell their mothers for a tax break for the rich.... on and on. It's going to get really ugly, because the Democrats have nothing else to run on.

The way I see it, if we KNOW this is heading down the pike, regardless of who we pick, we might as well pick the craziest nutbag in the room, and let them flail away! It's hard to destroy someone who has already destroyed themselves with their craziness, so Ron Paul, in light of the current political climate, might not be such a bad candidate after all.

Shorter Dixie: In case there was any doubt in anyone's mind (in which case you should see a doctor immediately to ensure that you still have a mind), I will support the Republican candidate for president, whoever the hell it happens to be, even Adam Sandler's character in The Waterboy, over Barack Obama.

Love the Waterboy, I quote that film all the time!!

As for Dixie's comment about "Paul's most crazed fanatics," anyone who opposes him, is by definition one of those, so Dixie is by definition, at least partly a Paul fanatic.

I'd vote for Ron Paul, of course I am rather libertarian. That would be awesome.

He's the Dennis Kucinich of the republicans... And Dung.. Don't be jealous. You know you'd vote for Dennis over any republican. I don't believe you have ever voted any differently.

Fortunately, I've never had to make that choice. However, if I did make that choice I'm sure could explain my decision in fewer than 500 words. Did anyone here ever have any doubt whatsoever that Dixie would vote for the Republican nominee?

Well, at least Dixie has the guts to admit he's just going to vote ABO when the time comes...

I think you are secretly sad Trump isn't a candidate. ;)

We won't have to either. Or won't be able to. Depending on how you look at it. Ron Paul is too Ron Paul for the republicans.

I think Paul would be a good president. He's pledged to cut the budget by a trillion. I'm a little bothered by his foreign policy, but I like his stance on requiring Congress to declare war instead of the way its been done for the last 50 years, which is bullshit. He's not my first choice, nor is he my last.

Ron Paul is too interested in social freedom for the Republicans. He is a social liberal.

No disrespect to Dixie but I don't think it takes that much guts for a Republican to say he is going to vote for the Republican candidate.

I didn't really post the thread to show guts, and I admit I thoroughly intend to cast my vote for the only political party that can defeat Barack Obama, regardless of the candidate, which is kind of the point of the thread... If it's Romney, I'll support Romney... if it's Newt, I'll support Newt... even if it's Ron Frickin Paul, I can support him over Obama. I think it's interesting, there are conservatives who don't necessarily share my feelings, they would vote for Paul, but if he doesn't get the nomination, they'll piss away their votes on the Libertarian. Romney moderates could probably just not bear to pull the lever for Newt. How could a Bachmann fanatic get behind Newt or Romney, after the bashing she has done to both? Same can be said for Santorum... At some point along the way, conservatives of every stripe are going to need to come together for the common good, defeating Barack Obama. If we end up with Newt, we have to find some way to reconcile our dislike, if we dislike him, same for Romney or Paul, or even Bachmann or Santorum, whoever the nominee is, there will be a rather large contingent of conservative republicans who are disappointed, because it wasn't their guy/gal.

The point of the matter is... even a Ron Paul, as out of whack as he may be for mainstream conservative America, would be MARKEDLY better as president for the next 4 years. The same goes for ANY of the GOP candidates.
