President Biden creates commission to study adding Supreme Court justices

Yeah, it is, https://www.rutgers.edu/news/what-court-packing I hate talking to dumb rightys. Yet they are always so damn sure of what they say. I suppose Fox explained it all to you.
damn you are stupid.

FDR tried to pack the court, it has nothing to do with any appointment within the 9 justices.
That how the term was started (pack them in like sardines)
best yu look at the historical definition, not some dumb ass lib article facilitating Biden

Simply put, court packing refers to the process of Congress adding more seats to the Supreme Court in an effort to secure a majority.

Since 1869, there have been nine seats in the United States Supreme Court, but that number is subject to change. The Constitution grants Congress the power to either add or subtract seats; the Supreme Court has seen as few as five justices and as many as 10 throughout its 231-year existence.

This video is THE funniest thing I have seen in weeks!

I laughed til I cried.

It is SO creative and slightly demented.

And it centers on kittens.

I thought you, of all people, might enjoy it.

We can resume hostilities afterwards.

Alrighty, that was totally adorable. I'm going to thank your post and you should cherish it, there may not be a whole lot coming your way in the future.

It is to guarantee their independence. An age limit may be more appropriate. Term limits just guarantee presidents more appointments which is only a good thing if you like the president in office at the time.

I think adding judges is more likely to apply to the lower district and appellate courts rather than the Supreme Court.

It doesn’t guarantee anything. Justices typically remain beholden to the ideology of the president who appointed them.

When McCONNELL refused to hear Obama’s appointment of Garland he was packing the court, and when he ignored his own made up partisan rule of allowing an in-coming administration to choose the appointment, HE WAS PACKING THE COURT.

You demonstrate why Biden should do whatever is best for Democrats best interest and completely ignore Republican whining.

no that is NOT PACKING THE COURT. it was an appointment to an EXISTING VACANCY

The term "packing eh court" originated under FDR -when he tried to INCREASE the seats.
Insults to me aside -do soem research like you used to do and quit hyperventillatiing at me

On February 5, 1937, President Franklin Roosevelt announced a controversial plan to expand the Supreme Court to as many as 15 judges, allegedly to make it more efficient. His critics immediately charged that Roosevelt was trying to “pack” the court and thus neutralize Supreme Court justices hostile to his New Deal.

The Washington Posts defines the term - “Court packing is adding more judges to a court than there are now, something that can be done on the federal level simply by passing a law. The Constitution says nothing about how many justices there must be on the Supreme Court, and over time, the number has fluctuated. The court started out with six justices, expanded to seven and has gone as high as 10. Congress set the Supreme Court to be nine justices in 1869, but if a president and Congress agree, they could change the law to expand the court or shrink it.”

Biden is studying it, nothing more. The right was told that might happen if they packed the court by stealing 2 seats and lying about it. The Dems have allowed the rightys to fracture norms and do what they want, then go back to acting normally. This time they might not.

in what possible illegal and unconstitutional way did they steal 2 seats and lie about it????????

So why the need for additional Justices?

What advantage does that give Democrat-Socialists except to make certain that SCOTUS decisions go their way?

The Roberts court is the most pro-corporate, anti-worker of all time. We know why the right lied and put the last 2 judges in.

lifetime appointment - not reappointing, not having to find another career after..that makes them as independent as possible in our polarized society

I can see that in opposite terms also. Able to do and say whatever you want with no fear of repercussions. I don't think a justice would have trouble finding a legal job after his term was over.

Packing the court means artificially adding to YOUR side of the divide. McCONNELL dreamed it up. There was no precedent for it, thus he artificially added his party’s appointment to the court. Obama making the choice as the sitting president would have been the prescribed constitutional transition.

I fully under stand the history of Supreme Court appointment, and regardless of how the Washington Post defines it, which specifically defines the attempt by FDR, court packing requires a broader definition given what McCONNELL did, which was far beyond just filling an empty seat.

Isn’t your last line in your post above EXACTLY what Trump did?

that is not "packing" - McConnell "dreamed it up" (changing Senate Rules) somewhat like Harry Reid changed Senate rules for judicial nominees only requiring a majority, and not the previous 60 vote threshold

no. you are changing the definition to suit your political purpose.

Regardless; Biden's subterfuge here is a smoke screen to PACK THE COURT (number of seats)
which has nothing to do with nominating in the last year of a POTUS!

You can't just change definitions to make what you want to conflate to McConnell /Trump
(appointing to an existing vacancy) to normalize the desire to dilute conservative members by "packing"

I’ll be frank. I don’t really engage in political argument with republicans that actually matters. You’re free to believe whatever you choose to believe. I believe Democrats should chart their own course irrespective of whatever republicans believe, which is exactly what your side believes.

Bi-partisanship is a myth, a joke, and a distraction from getting things done in today’s body politic.
