WASHINGTON — New approaches approved by President Trump to defeat Islamic State militants have begun to bear fruit, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters Friday.

Commanders in the field have been given greater authority to press the fight without approval from Washington, and a tactical shift to "annihilation" from a war of attrition has thrown fighters from the Islamic State, or ISIS, on "their back foot," Mattis said.

"We're there to drive ISIS to its knees," Mattis said.

"de-radicalization" camps ( like our prisons,but with goal of rehabilitation)

These are key to turning young men's lives around -fairly new concept -i do not know the results

SA is an extreme conservative country, just starting modernization.

It's at least on the right path, unlike ISIS,and AQ Core in Afghanistan -where we've been warring for 15 years.

Much of the package builds on commitments made before Trump took office, although some elements are new, including weapons designed to help Saudi Arabia in an air campaign it has led in war-torn Yemen, officials said.

The Trump administration separately informed Congress on Friday that it will sell some $500m in precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia. These include laser-guided Paveway II bombs and JDAM kits for converting unguided bombs into "smart bombs".

However on the topic of terrorism, yes, technically SA is an ally against Shia terrorists, but haven't been strong against Sunni terrorism. Sometimes they see them as an allie. ISIS/AQ are SUNNI. Sunni's are the crazier of the 2 sects.

They support wahhabism and never forget 15 of the hijackers came right from SA. Growing up in the extremism and ant-western culture that is produced in SA. If they want to be a real ally, they must seek some serious cultural reforms.

back to the arms deal...the US has been providing logistical support against the Houthis (Iranian proxies) in Yemen

This is a pretty decent sized package that would relieve the US of a lot of required support.
That's a good thing. we want them to be able to settle their own affairs

Cool, so you agree Trump should sell billions more in Weapons to them so they can indiscriminately bomb women and children in Yemen.

dumb ass dumb down.. one key component is smart bombs to reduce the rubble.
There is noting "indiscriminate" about it -anymore then our bombings of hospitals in Afghanistan.

SA didn't ask for this war, it spilled over ( SA border guards were getting killed) -
and Iran is supplying the Houthi's as their proxy. Should SA just take it and not fight back?
