POTUS in Saudi Arabia

WASHINGTON — New approaches approved by President Trump to defeat Islamic State militants have begun to bear fruit, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters Friday.

Commanders in the field have been given greater authority to press the fight without approval from Washington, and a tactical shift to "annihilation" from a war of attrition has thrown fighters from the Islamic State, or ISIS, on "their back foot," Mattis said.

"We're there to drive ISIS to its knees," Mattis said.

..a key allie in fighting terrorism ( al-Qaeda and Isis have been doing bombing campaigns in eastern SA.)

It's past time to treat them as the key regional power they are,and stop this "human rights" as driving the relationship

Forget the Iranian deal. It was a bad mistake, but the damage was to our Sunni allies.
It go so bad King Salman refused to go to DC..

Look for Trump and Salman to establish warm personal relations

another foreign policy reset by Trump..to bad we didn't get Russian, but SA is key in the MIddle East

Of course, SA is also a key ally in producing terrorism, as well.

Gulf Council Economic meeting tonight, and visiting one of SA's
"de-radicalization" camps ( like our prisons, but with goal of rehabilitation)

These are key to turning young men's lives around -fairly new concept -i do not know the results

your usual ignorance on display. They entire region produces terrorism.
SA is an extreme conservative country, just starting modernization.

It's at least on the right path, unlike ISIS,and AQ Core in Afghanistan -where we've been warring for 15 years.

Terrorism will get you beheaded in SA

prior to the trip, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, said the visit will "bolster the strategic partnership between the two countries".

He added, that "several agreements will be signed, including political agreements ... and big economic agreements".

Marwan Kabalan, an analyst at the Doha Institute's Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, told Al Jazeera the US and Saudi Arabia will discuss a strategic plan aimed at countering "extremism" as an ideological battle.

I think both sides have high expectations of this summit, as they are expected to discuss the most pressing issues for both of them like the conflict in Yemen, the war in Syria and the war on ISIL,"

peaking on condition of anonymity, US officials familiar with the package told The Associated Press news agency that the deal would include Abrams tanks, combat ships, missile defence systems, radar and communications and cyber security technology.

Much of the package builds on commitments made before Trump took office, although some elements are new, including weapons designed to help Saudi Arabia in an air campaign it has led in war-torn Yemen, officials said.

The Trump administration separately informed Congress on Friday that it will sell some $500m in precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia. These include laser-guided Paveway II bombs and JDAM kits for converting unguided bombs into "smart bombs".

Smart bombs would be very useful in Yemen

Interesting to see what the 'Republicans' really believe in: absolute monarchy and the denial of human rights. Heil Trump and death to intelligence!

Israel is the only functioning democracy in the Middle East yet you dismiss them as fascists.

what difference at this point does it make? (Clinton)
Haven't we had enough of neocon's "spreading democracy?"

just deal with them

Signed a 110B dollar deal that will create business here in America! Another big win!

However on the topic of terrorism, yes, technically SA is an ally against Shia terrorists, but haven't been strong against Sunni terrorism. Sometimes they see them as an allie. ISIS/AQ are SUNNI. Sunni's are the crazier of the 2 sects.

They support wahhabism and never forget 15 of the hijackers came right from SA. Growing up in the extremism and ant-western culture that is produced in SA. If they want to be a real ally, they must seek some serious cultural reforms.

So, all of those unchecked Wahabbist schools are just my imagination?

Scholars on Islam and extremism, including experts on radicalization in many countries, push back against the notion that Saudi Arabia bears predominant responsibility for the current wave of extremism and jihadist violence.

They point to multiple sources for the rise and spread of Islamist terrorism, including repressive secular governments in the Middle East, local injustices and divisions, the hijacking of the internet for terrorist propaganda, and American interventions in the Muslim world from the anti-Soviet war in Afghanistan to the invasion of Iraq.
The 20th-century ideologues most influential with modern jihadists, like Sayyid Qutb of Egypt and Abul Ala Maududi of Pakistan, reached their extreme, anti-Western views without much Saudi input.
Al Qaeda and the Islamic State despise Saudi rulers, whom they consider the worst of hypocrites.

“Americans like to have someone to blame — a person, a political party or country,” said Robert S. Ford, a former United States ambassador to Syria and Algeria. “But it’s a lot more complicated than that. I’d be careful about blaming the Saudis.”

While Saudi religious influence may be disruptive, he and others say, its effect is not monolithic. A major tenet of official Saudi Islamic teaching is obedience to rulers — hardly a precept that encourages terrorism intended to break nations. Many Saudi and Saudi-trained clerics are quietist, characterized by a devotion to scripture and prayer and a shunning of politics, let alone political violence.

And especially since 2003, when Qaeda attacks in the kingdom awoke the monarchy to the danger it faced from militancy, Saudi Arabia has acted more aggressively to curtail preachers who call for violence, cut off terrorist financing and cooperate with Western intelligence to foil terrorist plots. From 2004 to 2012, 3,500 imams were fired for refusing to renounce extremist views, and another 20,000 went through retraining, according to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs — though the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom expressed skepticism that the training was really “instilling tolerance.”

back to the arms deal...the US has been providing logistical support against the Houthis (Iranian proxies) in Yemen

This is a pretty decent sized package that would relieve the US of a lot of required support.
That's a good thing. we want them to be able to settle their own affairs

Cool, so you agree Trump should sell billions more in Weapons to them so they can indiscriminately bomb women and children in Yemen.

Fraud.

dumb ass dumb down.. one key component is smart bombs to reduce the rubble.
There is noting "indiscriminate" about it -anymore then our bombings of hospitals in Afghanistan.

SA didn't ask for this war, it spilled over ( SA border guards were getting killed) -
and Iran is supplying the Houthi's as their proxy. Should SA just take it and not fight back?
