I see it as the sort of brutal war that humanity has waged on itself for millennia. In my view, and I know you'll disagree, The only REAL war crime is losing. In WW 2, US GI's were often prosecuted for crimes similar to those civilians might perpetrate: Murder, rape, sodomy, that sort of thing. They were rarely prosecuted for what are called "war crimes" today. Threatening enemy POW's? Nah. Shooting surrendering troops in the middle of a battle? Nah. Blasting buildings they suspected the enemy was in but weren't sure? Never. Shooting civilians that happened to be in the middle of a battle? Nope.
The Russians are waging the brutal kind of war that's always been fought. The Ukrainians are responding in kind. Militaries are not police. They aren't there to "Bring the bad guys to justice." They're there to kill the enemy and destroy all their toys with extreme prejudice and overwhelming firepower. No restraint on that. It's utterly stupid and insane to demand that militaries fight wars like the police trying to arrest some violent criminal.
The West now lives in a complete fantasy world.
This is going to hurt.
