Oh please! What percentage of murders like this occur compared to the number of gun owners in the country. This happened because the state of Texas does not require background checks. If they had done a background check the shooter would never have been allowed to buy his weapon.
It doesn't matter how many gun laws you enact people with evil intent will find a way to obtain a gun. You are espousing another anti-gun hysteria feel good action.
To people like Owl, they think that once you hit a certain threshold on the number of laws passed, those that currently don't follow the laws will suddenly begin to do so. They are the type idiots that think criminals will follow the law if enough of them are passed.

Require every transaction to be recorded. Even a gift to your crazy Uncle Joe. The “title” to the weapon follows the weapon. Don’t have that documentation? Confiscate the gun and time for jail.
Hold the manufacturers liable for their products, much like the tobacco people. Gun stores, too. You set up shop just across the city/county line from Chicago, you know EXACTLY who and why you sell large numbers of weapons.
National gun laws, not a hodgepodge of local ones. Federal offenses carry more weight.
