Paul Sancya / AP 10 hours Raise the Minimum Wage? Foes Say They'll Stop Tipping???

That's not what the OP is saying though. They are saying that service sector jobs would be required to pay a living wage starting at $15/hour. At a restaurant, since the cost of that additional compensation would be reflected in the price you pay for your meal I see no reason why I, the customer, should be expected to subsidize their pay. I should only tip, in that situation, if I feel that the quality of service is superb and only if I feel inclined to do so. Now if they're making minimum wage and that is reflected in lower prices at the Restaurant, then I feel that I should tip for good service. Again, the server can't have their cake and eat it do, they can't expect both a higher wage and tips unless their skill level and the market determine so.

it's not about the server having his cake and eating it too... it's about ME getting absolute world class service in restaurants. If all I were there to do is refuel, it wouldn't matter to me, but, as I have tried to say, dining is a wonderful, and, when it all clicks, a memorable experience that I do not mind paying for. If I tip a waiter who does well a handsome tip... and then I got back to that restaurant and ask to sit in his section, I will get world class service.... nearly every time. That is worth something to me.

Uh-oh maineman, you're starting to sound like a Republican making it all about you. :)

You have money. You can afford to go to nice restaurants. You can afford to pay more. You can afford to tip well. Not everyone can do that. The discussion/debate here isn't about you, it's about the effect of a raise for server from around $2.50/hr to $15/hr.

But the same principles apply at Denny's... If you go for breakfast at Denny's and you ask for your hashbrowns and your bacon to be EXTRA crispy and your eggs sunnyside and runny, and your server makes that happen, tip them 20%. That won't break anyone's wallet and, when you go back to Denny's, ask to sit in the same waiter's section. His wages are his wages that he, and evry other schmuck in the place makes. His tips are what he earns by his own individual effort and tipping well, even at relatively inexpensive joints will engender loyalty which will, in many cases, translate into noticably better food.

I tip 20% at every meal. I'm sure most others do as well. I don't get any special treatment for that. If you have a local go to restaurant that you frequent regularly maybe a specific server will take care of you but no server is going to remember you if you come in two or three times a year and tip 20%.

The issue up for debate is why the raise from $2.50 to $15?

my wife will tell you it's because a whole hell of a lot of people DON'T tip like we do.

"The issue up for debate is why the raise from $2.50 to $15? " I wont respond to this uneducation, I'll just let that rest in your brains LOL. Clearly this moron thought he would "win" by typing this.

Tip jobs are BS jobs. Otherwise everyone would be trying hard to be the person that delivers pizza. It's simply a way an employer can pay their workers less like all employers want to do.

I recently had a Right Wing friend tell me that I should tip Wal-Mart workers if I think they deserve more pay...........................I couldn't even begin to describe this stupidity.....

Ok "educated". Remind us where you went to school again? Remind us of your education level. As others have said you are a horrible troll.

What a poor attempt at trolling.

It's possible some people could be priced out of being able to eat out. If wages for a server go from $2.50/hr to $15/hr you know the owner of the restaurant is going to pass that increase on to the customers. If you are one that is raising a family on minimum wage or just above that small increase might make eating out unaffordable.

Last time I checked...eating out was not a Right.
