Our troubles are over.....

I disagree. Annie believes there are plenty of jobs. Enough for someone to have even multiple jobs if they work hard. She has said so repeatedly in this thread. The facts just don't line up with this, though and I think you know that. I find your statement surprising and indicative of either a dispairing (to me) lack of awareness on your part or some kind of party blinder situation.

Nope, I never said or implied 'there were plenty of jobs,' indeed I said there weren't enough jobs. What I did say and imply is that people are going to have to create their own jobs, which is very risky or they should take jobs they don't like for any number of reasons, to get back in the work force. Two and three year gaps in work are not going to lead to 'better jobs.'

Creating your own job doesn't really work when the problem that led to to your unemployment in the first instance is a lack of demand for goods and services. There's no one to buy the goods and services you create at your newly created job.

And the problem also isn't that people are too picky and aren't taking shitty jobs. Again, there are 4 unemployed people for each job opening. That includes good jobs, great jobs and shitty jobs. There just aren't enough jobs to go around.

Then why are those jobs still open? New businesses are being created daily, most don't succeed. Odds are the guy let go by the auto industry isn't trying to start up an auto plant. She/he would have to start up using the ideas, skills, and dreams they have today. Risky even if little money is involved, it's the heart and plunging in that gives it that presents both opportunities to succeed and fail.

Many businesses got their beginnings in the depression, now too. It certainly makes more sense than doing nothing. It's something you can put on your resume, beats 99 weeks of unemployment then panhandling.

Okay, let's 'look at me.' I've felt so welcomed here, with the empathy from the left regarding my position regarding employment.

I'm 56 years old. I am functionally deaf, with a bi-lateral hearing loss. I lost my teaching position in 2010. I collected unemployment that summer. Began substitute teaching in two districts the following Aug/Sept. One paid $80 per day, the other $95. The following Christmas break I applied for unemployment again, as 'loss of work due to day-to-day hire.' Surprise! Teachers are the only group in IL exempted from the cause. Yep, I don't have work for institutes and holidays. I've no benefits. The teachers retirement cost me over $24 for every $100 earned.

So without any 'safety net' I went and found part time work, at Walgreens. Wow! Truth to tell, this minimum wage job has been a life saver. Over the summer, remember I do not 'qualify' for unemployment, they gave me full time work. Not a lot, but certainly better than starving.

The 'empathy' on this board by some is so gross as to drive away anyone thoughtful but unwilling to attack you tools. May you rot in hell.

Annie you are by far one of the good ones. I have been fortunate with work and enjoy what I do. I think your choice to do what you had to and even better, to be grateful for it, is sorely missing from the attitudes of most.

Yet an extension of those same benefits without change is what is asked for, and being rejected. I don't think they should pass it without attaching something that can actually change the situation. It's beyond irresponsible to argue that status quo continuance of a short term solution is the only thing that should happen.

I've always been a supporter that if you are on unemployment you should have to do something for it. Train in a new job, for instance. Clean the highways if you refuse to learn. And actually look for a job...

Yeah, we'd have to actually offer training but it at least puts a light at the end of a tunnel.

Some of what you say I could agree with. It's just the reality that hacks me off. Pass the status quo or we'll say you are monsters... It's rubbish. Monstrous is pushing for doing nothing while continuing in the same path that has led us to stagnation.

But we all know what the Repubs would say regarding training. "The money! The money!"

Look how long it took ONE state to offer courses. (I think it's North Carolina.) People are forbidden to take classes, increase their education, while collecting UI. "Why should we pay for their education?" That is the craziness of it all. A better educated individual or one who keeps up with new developments in their trade/profession has a better chance to find a job.

Some people don't want to help. Imagine the current bunch of politicians trying to get an agreement on courses. Instead of having that in place a long time ago they wait for a crisis. It's too late now to tie an extension to education. People have to eat now. It's fine to start a discussion but an extension of benefits is required right away.

Those politicians had access to job trends years ago. They knew what was down the road. They should have planned for it.
