You make such generalizations for argument...while we may have accepted youth in our military that would otherwise go to jail, anyone showing any of the obvious signs of these types of hateful beliefs would be deemed unfit for service and anyone in command that put up with it or encouraged it would be found unfit for service. Your argument does not hold water.
That they have been convicted of a crime shows them to be unfit. And if a soldier believes that his race is superior, they should be mustered out? What is they just dislike another race? What if they have had bad experiences with another race and hold it against them?
I bring that up because many blacks hold a grudge against whites for the injustices of the past. That could get many blacks kicked out of the service as well, whether they were good soldiers or not. That is one of the reasons I asked about how we police people for what they believe rather than what they do.

That sounds great, and I would love to see it be like that.
But the fact that racism thrives in the same socio-economic strata that the military gets most of its recruits from means it isn't happening anytime soon.
Plus, few will say out loud that they are racist. Most will keep quiet about it. Those with swastika tatts are the tiny minority of the racists in the military. Which is why I have asked the questions I have asked.
Politically incorrect inferring that it's simply a liberal sensibility and not worth a real Americans concern or effort to correct.
Once it's revealed that racism and hate are 'political' in someone's view, I'm done trying to reason with that person.

A more thorough background check?? If they have committed no crime, then all that is left is to have military personnel contact family, friends, teachers, ect and ask about them. Unless these recruits were some sort of radical racists, making demonstrations and the like, the more thorough background checks will not show anything more. Exactly who is it that you think will tell the military that the kid is a racist?
