aug 24 2022 The University of Pennsylvania expanded a program that admitted minority and other underrepresented college applicants into its Perelman School of Medicine under special criteria, including waiving the Medical College Admission Test requirement.

The program has “officially broadened” this year to include students from Howard University, Oakwood University, Xavier University of Louisiana, Morehouse College and Spelman College, according to a Perelman School of Medicine news release.

Some medical professionals have been critical of this particular affirmative action approach.

“The stakes are too high (life and death) to start lowering standards or taking shortcuts with basic fundamental scientific knowledge necessary for developing critical thinking skills to diagnose and properly treat diseases,” Dr. Diana Blum, a neurologist in private practice, told The College Fix in an August 19 email inquiring about the program specifically.

“If the school wants to improve diversity in the applicant/acceptance candidate pool, it would be better to focus on providing resources (perhaps free MCAT prep classes?) to lift the caliber of diverse candidates up and get them better prepared for the challenges of medical school instead of lowering the standards (which indirectly insinuates that these students are somehow not as capable),” Dr. Blum wrote.

Perelman School of Medicine is highly competitive

The Perelman School of Medicine is among the most competitive medical schools in the US. Its acceptance rate is around 4 percent, with admitted students having an average GPA of 3.89, according to Kaplan.

The average MCAT score of Penn medical graduates is around 520, placing the school in the 98th percentile.

well to be fair, you dont have to be Dr Kildare to abort babies and shoot up junkies who have ODed with that OD counteragent.

but yes, do take a gander at the sheepskin before you book an appointment.

And while our resident cross burners clean the ejaculation off their sheets, here's a little tidbit that existed LONG before the OP

And then there's this troubling spectre:

No empirical data exists about the current prevalence of legacy policies or practices in medical school, and we found only one peer-reviewed article that explored the issue from a theoretical perspective. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that legacy practices in medical school admissions are common, if also vaguely troublesome. For example, several Colleges of Medicine advertise special programs (here and here) or guaranteed interviews for legacy students, while simultaneously noting that legacy status does not factor into the likelihood for acceptance into the medical school. This paradox exemplifies the problem: a complex push-pull between the desire to preserve medicine’s honorable traditions while at the same time fulfilling contemporary commitments to equity and fairness.

Yup - it's all just talk. And who cares anyway?. Legacy admissions are not about race. THINK, you miserable white-hating racist.

My daughter took the MCAT test...I believe it was 8 hours with no breaks except for restroom breaks.

Average MCAT Scores:

Whites: 507.5
Blacks: 497.6
Asians: 508.6

Average MCAT Scores for those attending medical school:

Whites: 512.7
Blacks: 505.9
Asians: 514.5

The "passing" score varies by institution based on how selective their admissions policies are.

And even those numbers have been massaged. The actual black scores are much much lower.

Your point? I believe you are trying to say everyone should take them regardless of color or race, correct?

My best friend in medical school was there on a full ride scholarship . He had been offered an interview at Harvard but he did not take the offer. I did not get a scholarship and I did not get an interview at Harvard. I finished in the top ten percent of my class He finished in the bottom 20%. The medical school had a free tutoring program for students who were at risk of failing a class. The school hired students with at least a 90 average in a course to tutor students with a 79 or lower average. I tutored him in biochemistry and anatomy and physiology and a few other classes. We got him through but it was close at times..

His mother was from Spanish parents who worked for a silver mine in Mexico. His mother was born in Mexico and had dual citizenship in Spain and Mexico. That made my friend, who is white as I am, half Hispanic. My college GPA and MCAT score was considerably higher than his and I also have a Masters degree that he did not have. The reason he got accepted into medical school and got an interview offer by Harvard was he is 50% Hispanic. BTW He didn't go to the Harvard interview because he is a petroleum geologist and put together oil leases to help support his family during medical school. So he needed to be in Texas not Boston.

So the average score of whites who just took the test (Whites: 507.5) is higher than blacks who actually are accepted into med school (Blacks: 505.9).

Not that much variation in the scores. In the end medical training and growing experience will count for more.
