Oklahoma Executions

There was a big botched execution in Oklahoma tonight. The twitterati is buzzing. All my liberal tweeters are expressing outrage and disgust and shame and all this other stuff about the "cruel and unusual" punishment. I checked out the story and found this:

"Mr. Lockett was convicted of shooting a 19-year-old woman in 1999 and having her buried alive. Mr. Warner, condemned for the rape and murder of an 11-month-old girl in 1997, was to be executed two hours later."

I'm not for the DP, but with all of the horrors in the world, I just can't get any outrage up over this. WTF am I supposed to do, sit around crying about these guys? One BURIED A 19 YO GIRL ALIVE, and the other RAPED AND MURDERED AN INFANT. I guess what really bothers me is that the people tweeting about this have not said one damned word about what they were convicted of. How can you not at least have mixed emotions on this?

It's a barbaric practice.

Of all of the issues, the death penalty is one that I can say has me seriously conflicted. I've been all over the place on it.

I agree w/ your statement, and think that as a country & society in general, we need to strive to be better than that. However, I have also seen and read how the death penalty has given the family of victims peace. And that's really not a small thing, or something I feel like preaching to anyone about.

And I agree w/ the OP; it's a little weird that this is the only concern for some people who are commenting on the story.

Simple. We don't know whether they are truly guilty or not.
Innocent people are released after long terms routinely.

Well said, that is how I feel. I find myself arguing with everyone over it. I get really angry and disgusted inside when I see liberals pontificating about a case like this, and not one word about the crimes which are sooooo heinous as to defy any human understanding. And I know if either of the victims were my children or nieces etc, I would want to do the same to them. I would not want them to live. But intellectually I know that it's true that the DP is not about who they are, but about who we as a society are. And then when I see conservatives arguing for the DP I get angry and upset that they never take into account how many innocent people are wrongly convicted or that the DP is utilized in a very racist manner. It's a big mish-mosh of emotions for me. Probably the only issue that I go all over the place on.

The guy who died last night in the botched execution seems to be definitely guilty, there was no question and he admitted it. The 2nd one whose execution has been stayed now that they effed the other one up, the one who was convicted of raping and murdering an 11 mo infant (!) claims to be innocent. I know, people are wrongly convicted and usually there black men. It's true. But if I were going to get all indignant over this, I would first say something about the crimes, and about the 19 yo girl and 11 month infant who never got a chance to live and were murdered in such inhumanely brutal ways. I would be ashamed to cry over this practice without first giving a nod to the loved ones whose lives must be lived in torment now. Never being able to forget the last horrifying and terrifying and painful moments of their loved one's lives.

A few people unfollowed me on twitter last night. All I said was maybe they could say something about the crimes and the victims and shed a tear or two for them as well. I think that's pretty close minded, but also very typical of indignant liberals. I've dealt with them a time or two. Like on Assange. They are pretty funny when they get all hopped up on indignation. When you argue with cons they just call you a stupid whore and tell you to shut your dumb lady mouth. Liberals go all "i'm better than you" on you. It's interesting.

I am a family member of a murder victim. I don't know that the state killing the murderer would have given my family any more peace.

I'm very sorry.

Not really looking for sympathy, but thank you. It was a long time ago and I've mentioned it before. I don't think the the feelings of victims' families should be used to justify the death penalty and only raise it to rebut that specific point.

'Never take into account'... complete nonsense.
