**Offical Olympic Medal Count thread**

i found this to be amazing and deserving of an individual mention:

North Korea’s Om Yun Chol sets Olympic record by lifting three times his body weight

Whether it's high jumpers leaping nearly two feet more than their own height or sprinters running 100 meters in less than 10 seconds, there are some Olympic feats so remarkable they seem to defy basic common sense.
North Korean weightlifter Om Yun Chol pulled off another of those Sunday.

Om, who stands just 5-feet tall and weighs only 123 pounds, won a gold medal in the men's 56-kilogram category thanks in large part to clearing an Olympic record 168 kilograms (370.4 pounds) in the clean and jerk. In the process, he joined the likes of world record holder Halil Mutlu and Naim Suleymanoglu of Turkey in an exclusive group of weightlifters who have lifted three times their body weight.

Damned impressive. Not surprised he came from NK, but impressive none the less.

why does it surprise you he came from NK? are thinking what i'm thinking? the NK goverment trained this guy from a young age?

Young age, as in 2 generations prior. It's most likely he was bred specifically for the Olympics. Of course, that's just my theory. He very well could just be some farm kid or coal miner who is super bad ass, but being NK that's not likely.

good point. and it wouldn't surprise me.

I root for the good ol' USA, but it's hard w/ the hoops team. They're too dominant, and it's no fun.

I miss the days when they only allowed college players.
I don't. There's still a great deal of economic elitism in the Olympics. Permiting professionals has gone a long, long ways towards making it an egalitarian event. Where as before it was the games of the upper class as most working class people couldn't afford the opportutnities to develop their childrens atheletic talents.

Technically, sure. But blowouts are boring, and we still won mostly golds when it was only college players.

It was just more fun.
Actually that's not true. I believe in between 1968 and 1992, when the pros were admitted, the USA only won the gold medal twice. Not to mention that the USA NBA players lost the gold in 2004. It was remarkable that in that period we did win it twice as our 19-22 year old college amateurs were playing against significantly older professional athletes.

**DAILY UPDATE**

#1. China. 9 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze.
#2. America (FUCK YEAH!). 3 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze.
#3. Italy. 2 gold, 4 silver, 2 bronze.
#4. France. 2 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze.
#5. South Korea. 2 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronze.

Seems to be interesting how when we win Olympic sports we get the America(Fuck Yeah!) speech. When A country we don't like beats us, we trot out the breeding program, the young athletes, drug usage and any other argument that we can lay our hands on.

It's called nationalism. In the days of the east European sports programs there was a lot of truth to those arguments. The East Europeans DID have a systematic doping program, they did financially subsidize their athletes, they did manipulate the rules to their advantage. Permiting professional athletes ended a lot of that shit cause now it's all about da money.
