A 69-year-old Minnesota man has been shot dead after opening his door to a man who claimed he was being chased. Thomas Sonnenberg called 911 at 11:46am Friday for 20-year-old Devon Derrick Parker who police say told him he was being pursued by assailants with baseball bats.

When police arrived at the home on the 3700 block of North Aldrich Avenue in north Minneapolis, they found Sonnenberg dead.

Parker was apprehended inside the house.

Police spokesperson John Elder earlier indicated that Parker and Sonnenberg were acquaintances, but Sonnenberg's daughter Raina Baldwin says that was not the case.

'No. Absolutely not,' she told the Mail Online through tears.

'He thought he was helping someone in need, that's why he let him into the house,' she said.

Baldwin said she believes Parker was attempting to rob the house but did not realize that her mother was also in the home. Sonnenberg answered the door to Parker begging to come in because he was in danger. He let the young man inside and closed the door before calling 911. It was then that Parker shot him in the head.

Thomas Sonnenberg's wife Elaine Sonnenberg, 68, was in the kitchen at the time of the shooting. 'When the murderer found out she was here, he threw her around and choked her, and he was going to rape her,' Baldwin told Mail Online.

The front door locked behind Parker when he entered the house. When Parker realized, he threatened Elaine Sonnenberg to force her to give him the keys, says Baldwin.

Police, who Thomas Sonnenberg had called on Parker's behalf, arrived before he could escape.

Sonnenberg 'seems like an innocent victim. From all indications, this is not a bad guy, a drug deal gone wrong, or anything like that,' Elder told the Star Tribune.

Police recovered a handgun in the house which is believed to be the murder weapon, Elder said.

Court records show that Parker was on probation for a felony assault in 2011. Records show he has been booked on numerous felony charges, including shooting at a public vehicle or facility and throwing bodily fluids or feces and has drug and trespassing convictions.

James Farley, 18, allegedly violently removed Charlesey Smedley from her vehicle and threw her to the ground before around 2 a.m. on Jan. 13, deputies said.



Smedley was taken to Florida Hospital Kissimmee for non-life-threatening injuries.


Deputies said Farley fled the Capri Apartments in the Hunter's Creek area in Smedley's light blue 2003 Hyundai Accent.


The Kissimmee Police Department arrested Farley on Wednesday. He was booked into the Osceola County Jail.

A man has been charged with murder in the death of his toddler stepdaughter, saying he beat the girl for climbing on a counter and "stealing" a piece of cake.

Deonte L. Evans, 23, of the 1400 block of Rowan Avenue, was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder, child abuse, and armed criminal action for the death of the girl, Jabria Phillips, who was 23 months old. She died Tuesday morning of blunt force trauma.


Evans' wife and the girls' mother, Shanika M. Evans, 23, was charged with first-degree child endangerment. Court documents say she knew Evans had hit the baby but didn't do anything to tell medical authorities until early the next day when she was rushed to a hospital.


Police were called to the girl's home in the 1400 block of Rowan Avenue at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday for a "sick case." Police were told that the girl appeared lifeless and had been showing signs of illness the day and night before, police say. Jabria was taken to St. Louis Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.


According to court documents, Deonte Evans told police he hit the girl after she took the cake, and most of the blows he gave were to her torso. An autopsy showed that the fatal blows were to the girl's torso, which caused multiple injuries to her internal organs. The autopsy also showed the girl had healing fractures to about seven ribs and the fractures appeared to be about two or three weeks old. Deonte Evans told police that two or three weeks ago he hit the girl with one “swift and powerful” open hand to the torso, court documents say.


Deonte Evans' criminal history includes 2009 charges for second-degree assault and resisting arrest.

A teen who was one of four boys charged with sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl while videotaping the crime and later posting it on Facebook has been sentenced to 26 years in prison, prosecutors said today.

Scandale Fritz, 17, was charged as an adult and pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault in a court hearing on Thursday, Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez said in a press release.

Fritz was charged along with Justin Applewhite, 17, Kenneth Brown, 16, and Dyquier Garrett, 17.


All of the defendants were charged as adults with aggravated criminal sexual assault. The teens videotaped portions of the attack and later posed the video on Facebook, Alvarez said.


At the time of the 2012 attack Fritz and Brown were 15 years old while Applewhite and Garrett were 16 years old, officials said.


Prosecutors said that on Dec. 15, 2012 the 12-year-old victim went to Fritz' home because she knew him through her older brother. Applewhite and Brown were also at the home when the girl arrived. Fritz removed the girl's pants and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors said. After the first assault committed by Fritz, Brown then allegedly assaulted the girl, prosecutors said.


Applewhite then allegedly forced the girl to perform a sex act on him while Fritz videotaped the incident, prosecutors said. That video wa later posted on Facebook. Brown could be seen in the background of the video waving a gun, prosecutors said.


Garrett allegedly assaulted the girl after he arrived at the home a short time later, prosecutors said.

SANFORD, Fla. — Two men were arrested in Sanford on attempted murder charges after trying to kill another man with a hammer, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said on Monday.


Deputies said Julius Bender, 18, and Yahaziel Israel, 19, were charged with attempted homicide, burglary with assault or battery, and armed burglary.

Investigators said Bender and Israel beat the 50-year-old white man with a hammer inside his vehicle and then took him into the woods near Beardall Avenue and Lincoln Street, where they continued to attack him.


Investigators said a witness called 911 after hearing the victim's cries for help and seeing the beating.


Bender and Israel drove away in the victim's vehicle before deputies arrived and abandoned it nearby, said investigators.


Deputies said they found the victim in the woods, barely conscious and with severe head injuries. The victim's injuries are life-threatening and he remains hospitalized at Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition, deputies said.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (WCCO) – After 17 months of waiting, a family finally learned how much time the man who killed their son will be in prison.

A Stearns County judge sentenced 18-year-old Jesse Smithers to 10 years on Thursday. Smithers admitted to delivering the deadly punch in a St. Cloud alley almost a year and a half ago.


On Sept. 21, 2012, Colton Gleason was walking with friends when a car pulled up, and Smithers got out and punched him. Colton died after falling and hitting his head.


His father, John Gleason, says the pain, bitterness and hurt his family feels did not go away with the sentencing of the man responsible for his son’s death. “We’ve been given a life sentence by this cowardice attack and murder of our son,” John said. “He’ll serve very few short years and he’ll be back out again, and our son is gone forever.” John says his son was the victim of a deadly “knockout game.”


“This group was out there and their intentions were very clear. This is unprovoked. They stopped and they saw someone they thought they could victimize,” he said. “Colton didn’t have a chance to even turn and defend himself when somebody blind-sided punched him.”


Jesse Smithers was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for delivering the fatal punch. He originally entered a plea of not guilty, but changed it to 2nd-degree murder in Nov. 2013. He apologized in court Thursday for what he called a “complete accident.” But Colton’s mother, Julie, disputes this claim.


“Somebody didn’t just run over and hit a car and provoke an attack,” Julie said. “This was an attack that was meant to happen.”


This tragedy has changed his family forever. All they have now are the memories of a 20-year-old that was loved by so many. “He was just fun to be with all time, and he was always hugging and telling everyone he loved them,” she said.


If he doesn’t commit any offenses in prison, Smithers could be released in about five years.

[h=3]Gang ring investigation leads to arrest of 'most dangerous criminals in Hamilton County'[/h]

A four month investigation by local and federal authorities has led to the arrest of some of the most dangerous criminals in Hamilton County, according to the Cincinnati Police Department.

Authorities focused on a specific gang ring operating in the West End neighborhood and Thursday morning took 15-18 people into custody.

Cincinnati Police say the investigation began with the arrest of murder suspect Julius White back in October. He's accused of killing Dwayne Lamarr Lewis Jr., who's body was found in the middle of the street near the intersection of Blaine Road and Knox Street in South Fairmount.

After his arrest, authorities discovered White controlled the drug market in the West End. Now White and several of his associates are behind bars. "I saw all these police and people with black on. They were busy trying to get in the door but I guess that boom helped them to get that door because all of them people went in that door," says West End resident Shirley Colbert. Colbert says she woke up to the sound of police breaking off a neighbor's door. Cincinnati Police had made their move early Thursday morning making several drug and violent crime arrests in the neighborhood of West End.

Assistant Cincinnati Police Chief Lt. Colonel James L. Whalen says in all 18 men all connected to White were involved in drug trafficking, illegal firearms possession and violent acts. Thursday, they took 11 illegal weapons off the streets. "We are going to do what we need to do to end violent crime in the city," said Mayor John Cranley at a press conference acknowledging the department's efforts.

It is a bust mayor Cranley says will bring relief to the community. Resident Shirley Colbert agrees. "Anything that they can do to put us back in touch with ourselves to make sure our children have a future like everybody did for us is a plus for us. I don't care what we have to do to do that," says Colbert.

Cincinnati police says could not have completed this investigation without the help of ATF, FBI, and the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department.

Six Arrested After Man Beaten During Home Invasion, Pregnant Wife Raped


MADISON, WI – Police have arrested six people in connection to a brutal home invasion that left one man badly beaten, and his pregnant wife gang-raped.
On February 23, Kristopher Hughes, 20, Michon Thomas, 22, and Eric Bass, 23, broke into a home with plans to rob it. They had been given information by 21-year-old Efemia Neumaier, a woman who dated the owner and told the men they would find at least $1,500 inside the home. After planning the robbery, the trio of geniuses managed to break into the wrong home.

When they realized they had broke into the wrong home, they decided they might as well rob it. What they did to the couple they found sleeping inside led to interim Madison police Chief Randy Gaber stating: “In my 27-plus years of policing in Madison, this is probably one of the most disturbing and heinous crimes I have ever seen.”


The three men busted into the couples’ bedroom, one of them wearing a Scream mask, and demanded money. Hughes dragged the man out of bed and hit him multiple times in the head and face with a gun before punching and kicking him. The poor guy’s wife got it even worse.


According to police, she was pulled from her bed and forced to lie on her stomach in the hallway. When she informed the men she was six months pregnant, one of the men pointed a gun at her stomach, saying, “You’re going to die tonight.” Then all three men took turns raping the woman and forced her to perform oral sex.

Afterwards, the men put the couple in a laundry room before stealing electronics, credit cards and the couples’ wedding rings. They left the scene in a car driven by DeAndrae Mayweathers.

The couple tried waking up their neighbors after the assault, but were unable to do so. They ended up walking to a nearby business for help. They were later taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries suffered during the assault. The man reportedly had a baseball-sized contusion to his head and the woman was bleeding.


Within days, all three men involved with the actual robbery were arrested. Hughes and Thomas were both charged with conspiracy to commit an armed robbery, party to a crime of armed robbery and three counts of party to a crime of first-degree sexual assault. They face up to a $200,000 fine andor 140 years in prison if convicted. Their bail has been set at $50,000.

Bass has been charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, party to a crime of armed robbery and two counts of party to a crime of first-degree sexual assault. If he’s convicted, he’s looking at up to a $200,000 fine, 200 years in prison or both. His bail was set at $75,000.

Mayweathers, the getaway driver, is charged with conspiracy to commit an armed robbery. If convicted, he faces up to a $100,000 fine, 40 years in prison, or both. His bail was set at $10,000. His mother was in court during his arraignment and told reporters that her son comes from a Christian family.


DeMarco D. Mallit was arrested and charged with harboring or aiding a felon and theft of movable property. Investigators say the robbery was planned at his apartment. If convicted, he faces a $20,000 fine, seven years in prison or both. His bail was set at $5,000. Neumaier, the woman who allegedly set all of this in motion, has been charged with conspiracy to commit an armed robbery. If convicted, she faces up to a $100,000 fine andor 40 years in prison. Her bail was set at $5,000.


Officials are working with the couple since the robbery, and trying to ensure they are not re-victimized by not releasing their names. “These are remarkable people that will recover,” said Julie Foley, who manages victim and witness services for the Dane County District Attorney’s Office.

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Those who knew Vettia Roche say she was a "fighter" who had overcome a number of hardships and obstacles and had built a new life for herself in Montgomery. But things took a tragic turn when she was killed, allegedly at the hands of two of her coworkers.

According to court documents, Roche, 43, was shot multiple times and hit several times with a car jack during a robbery as she was leaving the Taco Bell in the 5300 block of Atlanta Highway, where she worked as the night manager.

Her body was found early Monday morning by cleaning and delivery crews and that afternoon, Montgomery police arrested two employees at the Taco Bell who worked with Roche. MPD detectives charged Renauldous Chisholm, 19, and Kenneth Temple, 19, both of Montgomery with one count each of capital murder in Roche's death. Both men are being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

On Tuesday, the Taco Bell remained closed. Black ribbons were on the doors of the restaurant, as a sign of mourning and tribute to Roche. In response to a sign placed on the front of the business Monday stating that the business was closed and apologizing for any inconvenience, anonymous customers placed another sign on the door which stated: "It's not an inconvenience. We're sorry for your loss, fear and grief. Stay safe! Your customers, Your community."

At nearby businesses, workers were stunned over what happened to Roche. "It was an inside job and it's just devastating that something like that would happen. My prayers go out to her family. It's sad to see something like that happen, especially to someone out trying to make a living for their family," said Mark Watts, owner of the Platinum Dreams salon, located in the strip mall behind the Taco Bell.

For Roche, it was a senseless ending to her quest to provide a life for her and her daughter. A Florida native, she moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi for school and in February of 2013, she lost nearly everything when a tornado tore through the area. She spoke to WLOX, WSFA's sister station in Biloxi, during their coverage of the tornado's destruction and revealed that her family rode out the storm in the bathroom of their mobile home.

In an effort to start fresh, she moved to Montgomery around Thanksgiving with her teenage daughter to be closer to her sister who lived in the area. In the beginning, they were living out of their car. That's when Roche reconnected with Becky Van Gilder, a Montgomery resident and old friend. The two had gone to high school together in Pensacola, Florida and Van Gilder saw on Facebook that Roche was looking for work and a place to live so she reached out to her and helped get her on her feet.

"She had been a manager at TJMAXX back in Mississippi so she was hoping to find a manager position over here so she found the position at the Taco Bell on Atlanta Highway and she was so excited. She had hoped to go through their manager program and get to open a new Taco Bell they were talking about opening. She was thrilled for the opportunity," Van Gilder said.

Roche thrived in her role over the past few months. But her fight from the bottom to the top took a tragic turn when she was brutally attacked and killed.

In the midst of her sadness over losing her friend, Van Gilder said she also has a lot of anger over what happened to Roche. "Those men worked with her and they knew what kind of person she was. She would have given them the money. She had a daughter to go home to. They didn't need to beat her and shoot her several times. That is just ridiculous. It's not worth it," Van Gilder said. "She's just been fighting and fighting to provide for her and her daughter and for everything she's gotten, she's fought the good fight and why these guys thought that they had the right to take that from her just makes me angry." Van Gilder says she'll always be inspired by Roche's determination and drive.

"She gave me inspiration on how not to quit and how to be an incredible mother, just to make whatever she could to make it for her daughter," Van Gilder said.

Once the investigation into her murder is complete, the case will be presented to a grand jury. Officials have not released any other details and declined to elaborate on how they identified Chisholm and Temple as the suspects in the killing. "We've got to do something to address this violent crime. I'm going to expend all the resources in my office to make sure that we get a handle on it and that we prosecute these violent crimes the fullest extent of the law," Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey.

1-year-old gets alcohol poisoning after drinking 6 shots of liquor

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A mother and her sister are facing charges after a one-year-old child allegedly drank six shots of vodka.

Shadreon Sade Jefferson, 17, and Shamara Batiste, 24, are each charged with endangering a child.

Authorities say on February 8, emergency personnel were dispatched to a home in the 7200 block of TC Jester after a one-year-old girl became unresponsive.

When they arrived, the baby girl was moaning and had vomited. Emergency personnel then noticed the child was swaying and smelled of alcohol. When the child was taken to the hospital, doctors determined the child had suffered alcohol poisoning.

The child's father told authorities his daughter had been in the care of her mother and aunt, and she was dropped off at his home in that condition.

Court documents state that when deputies interviewed the mother, she said she'd fallen asleep and when she woke up, Batiste told her she'd given the infant alcohol.

According to court documents, Batiste admitted the baby drank about six shots of vodka.

Philadelphia police have released surveillance video footage showing the group of teenage girls accused of assaulting a Temple University student with a brick.

The 19-year-old woman, who has declined to be identified, was walking with her boyfriend just off campus on Friday evening when a group of about 10 teenage girls began taunting them and then followed them for a block.

Police say one of the girls then struck the female student in the face with a brick while the other suspects tried to rob the student's boyfriend. The victim was left with dislocated teeth and a fractured jaw.

The incident happened on Friday evening when a group of about 10 teenage girls began taunting a Temple student and her boyfriend

'My boyfriend pushed the girl away from me that hit me in the face and then the girl’s sister came at me with a brick,' the victim told WCAU.

'I tried to get away as fast as I could. My teeth were halfway out of my mouth. I wasn’t thinking about anything besides getting to safety.'

Police say the suspects then fled the area by boarding a local bus. Surveillance video was released on Monday and shows the suspects are a gang of black teenage girls thought by police to be between the ages of 16 and 17.

The victim said she was hit twice with the brick, first in the face and then in the side of the head. ‘Her teeth were out of place,’ her 20-year-old boyfriend said. ‘It was terrible, it was terrifying.’

‘I tried to get away as fast as I could,’ she added. ‘My teeth were halfway out of my mouth. I wasn’t thinking about anything besides getting to safety.’

The girl was rushed to the hospital and underwent hours of emergency surgery to both save and align her teeth. ‘All of her teeth were pushed into the back of her mouth,’ said her father. ‘Her five top, front teeth were bent all the way back from the gum.’ She has since been released from care and is expected to recover, but has a long way to go. ‘I’ve been eating my food through a straw,’ she lamented.

Since the attack became public, another Temple University student has come forward and claimed that she too was attacked by a group of young girls in the same area at the same time.
