A 40-year-old woman called police and was taken to the hospital, accusing her boyfriend, 26-year-old Jordan Grimes, of attacking her with a baseball bat.

“Approximately two hours later is when the individual returned who was the suspect in the domestic and allegedly set the house on fire,” said Baltimore City Police Major Marc Partee.

There were as many as 10 people inside of the home at the time. The victims were treated at Johns Hopkins Bayview Burn Center.

Urine detection system installed in Atlanta transit station elevator

ATLANTA —
The city of Atlanta is looking to clean up the image, and the odor, of its transit system.

Many of its elevators have doubled as restrooms and smell like it. That's about to change with first-of-its-kind technology which catches "offenders" literally -- with their pants down.

"The smell hits you so bad. You hold your breath just to hurry up and get off the elevator," said Alicia Porter, a rider on a Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) train.

MARTA elevators have a smelly reputation. To get to the train, you often have to ride in a urinal first.

"If you've ever been in a Porta Potty, that's what it smelled like before," said MARTA Director of Elevators/Escalators Tom Beebe. Beebe is working to clean up the image and the odor of MARTA elevators by launching a pilot program in an elevator in one of the Midtown stations. They asked local media to not say which one.

There are 111 elevators in the system. Beebe said they were having problems here every day. But not anymore. "If somebody was to urinate in here, there's going to be a splash factor. It would splash and it would sense," Beebe said.

It's a urine detection device, called UDD. If a person relieves her or himself , the sensors sound the alarm and the MARTA police will be there in seconds to catch the offender in the act. There is also better lighting and a camera catching all the action. The pilot program has been in place for a month, and that daily problem dropped to one incident, in which an arrest was made. Next month, MARTA will begin installing sensors in other elevators, with the goal to have them in all 111.

It's going to cost MARTA about $10,000 to outfit each elevator with the urine detection device. This week, they also reopened restrooms at four stations, so they hope that will help with the problem.

Police: Son had mom killed to get at bank account, insurance policies

600

A West Side man arranged the murder of his mother, a well-known owner of a beauty salon in Uptown, to gain access to more than $90,000 from her bank accounts and the proceeds from two of her life insurance policies, authorities said today.

Qawmane Wilson, 24, of the 0-100 block of North Mayfield Avenue in the North Austin neighborhood, has been charged with murder and home invasion in the death of his mother, Yolanda Holmes, 45, in September of 2012, authorities said.

Charged with Wilson are Eugene Spencer, 22, of the 6100 block of South Rockwell Street, who prosecutors said killed Holmes, and Loriana Johnson, 23, of the 300 block of East 131st Place, who served as Spencer's driver.

All three were ordered held without bail today by Judge Adam Bourgeois, Jr., who called the slaying a "heinous act."

After the hearing, one relative of both Wilson and Holmes collapsed in the hall outside bond court and began crying. Another apparent family member with him declined comment.

Holmes, the owner of the Nappy Headzsalon, was killed about 4:15 a.m. Sept. 2 at her home in the 1000 block of West Montrose Avenue, authorities said. An autopsy showed she died of multiple stab wounds and a gunshot wound to her head.

Wilson was arrested Sunday after a police investigation determined he had arranged to "have his mother murdered," police said. He was charged with murder and home invasion.

Assistant State’s Attorney Maura White said Wilson, who has his mother's name tattooed on his right shoulder according to court records, liquidated his mother's bank accounts, valued at over $90,000, a week after her death. He was also the beneficiary of two of her life insurance policies.

Five teenagers were arrested when a 600-person brawl broke out in a Florida movie theater’s parking lot on Christmas night.

Described by police as a “melee,” the fight occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday outside the Hollywood River City 14 movie theater in Jacksonville when a group tried to storm the theater’s doors without purchasing tickets, police said. Several had rushed an off-duty police officer working as a security guard.

The officer “administered pepper spray to disperse the group, locked the doors and called for backup, following protocol,” said Lauri-Ellen Smith, a spokeswoman for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Soon after the pepper spray was used, “upward of 600 people moving throughout a parking lot about the size of a football field began fighting, disrupting and jumping on cars,” she said.

Sixty-two police officers were called to the scene to break up the brawl, “sequestering them and separating them,” Smith said.

Only minor injuries and damage to property were reported. No gunshots were fired, according to Smith.

All five of the people arrested on the scene were charged with crimes related to fighting. Three of those arrested, including one minor, were charged with felonies. Two other juveniles, who have not been named by police, were charged with misdemeanors.

Tevyn Alonza Davis, 19, was charged with resisting arrest and breach of the peace. Jaquade Marquis Miller, 18, was charged with fighting and resisting arrest. Khalil Ahmad Bradley, 17, the only minor charged with a felony, was arrested for resisting arrest, refusal to disperse and breach of the peace.

Davis and Bradley each “took a fighting stance” when confronted by police and told to leave the area, according to arrest reports. Miller, too, “took an aggressive stance” when told by police to leave the parking lot.

According to the movie theater’s website, the cinema was showing “Tyler Perry’s A Medea Christmas,” “47 Ronin,” “Grudge Match,” “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” along with several other movies.

Lizette Nevarez, 47, and Anna Nevarez, 40, were both arraigned Monday in Marlborough District Court on charges they mugged an elderly woman outside Petco and used her credit card to purchase more than $1,000 worth of items at Walmart. Hudson police arrested the sisters on Friday.

At the request of prosecutor Brook Lane, Lizette Nevarez, of 11 Creighton St., Apt. 410, Jamaica Plain, was held without bail and will return to court for a dangerousness hearing Thursday. She is charged with unarmed robbery of a victim over 65, assault and battery on a victim over 65 resulting in injury, larceny of a credit card, credit card fraud over $250, conspiracy and larceny over $250 by a single scheme.

Anna Nevarez, of 50 Briarwood Lane, Apt. 1, Marlborough, was released on $500 bail and ordered to stay away from and have no contact with the victim. She is charged with being an accessory after the fact, conspiracy, credit card fraud over $250, larceny over $250 by a single scheme and larceny over $250, and is due back in court Jan. 24 for a probable cause hearing.

Lane said Lizette Nevarez, who is on probation for a 2007 conviction for unarmed robbery, approached the elderly woman in the Petco parking lot Wednesday and made small talk before lunging at her, shoving her to the ground and stealing her pocketbook. The victim sustained a hip injury and bumps and bruises.

Anna Nevarez picked up her sister on Giasson Street and they drove to Walmart on Washington Street, where they used the victim's credit card and bought a number of items, including a large flatscreen TV, said Lane.

[h=1]Clifton Chatman: Cops Arrest Teen for Allegedly Killing Fellow Suspect During Robbery[/h]

San Francisco police arrested a teenage boy yesterday after he allegedly shot and killed 16-year-old Clifton Chatman, who police say was literally the suspect's partner-in-crime.

Sgt. Danielle Newman says the incident happened on Dec. 14 when a man was walking along the 500 block of Alemany Boulevard. A group of guys approached the victim and demanded his cellphone.

One of the robbers pulled out a gun while the other robbers rifled through the victim's pockets; the victim was not resisting and complying with the robbers' demands, but the armed man fired one shot at the victim anyhow, police said.

The shot bounced off the victim's face and instead hit one of the robbery suspects and killing him instantly, according to police.

The other robbers ran from the scene. When police arrived, they found the wounded robbery victim and the the deceased robbery suspect. The victim survived.

Police are not releasing the suspect's name or photo because he is a juvenile. He's being charged with attempted robbery and murder.

Kansas teens rob woman as she lay dying in Taco Bell drive-through: cops

Daquantrius Shaquill Johnson and Quanique Dontrell Thomas-Hameen, both 19, allegedly robbed Danielle Zimmerman, 43, after she suffered a brain aneurysm Dec. 29 in her truck at a Taco Bell drive-through. The woman had gone to get dinner for her husband of 21 years and their two teenage sons.

Cops collared two heartless Wichita, Kan., teens they say stole a woman’s wedding ring and other items as she lay dying in her truck at a Taco Bell drive-through. Daquantrius Shaquill Johnson and Quanique Dontrell Thomas-Hameen, both 19, had been charged and convicted of burglary in the past.

WEB-PIC-QUANIQUE-THOMAS-HAMMEEN--JOHNSON-DAQUANTRIUS--jpg.jpg

But the latest allegations, that the cold-hearted thugs stole Danielle Zimmerman’s wedding ring, purse, iPhone and cash as she suffered an aneurysm, has this Kansas community up in arms, The Wichita Eagle reported.

The two men are accused of ripping off the 43-year-old woman Dec. 29 as she went to pick up dinner for her husband of 21 years, Kris Zimmerman, and their two children, Noah, 13, and Alex, 18.

The woman suffered the fatal injury around 8 p.m., crashed into the drive-through’s speaker box and was unconscious when discovered. Her husband said the thieves had only a short amount of time to commit their callous crime because several people went to try and help her almost immediately.

“They can’t believe that somebody would do that … a crime like that to somebody in her condition,” Zimmerman told the Eagle of his shocked and heartbroken sons. “It’s kind of a cruel wake-up call for them.”

The loving mother was taken to the hospital but succumbed the next day. Her organs were donated. “I knew that she wanted that,” Kris Zimmerman told the newspaper. “Through this tragedy, maybe she can help save somebody else’s life.”

Upon reaching his wife, Kris Zimmerman quickly realized she was missing her wedding ring, which has sentimental value and is described as having white gold and diamonds.
Her purse, with several credit cards, $150 in cash and an iPhone were also missing from the woman’s pick-up truck.

Cops got a tip recently and nabbed the two suspected thieves on Friday. Johnson is held on suspicion of robbery, criminal possession of a firearm and a probation violation and is in custody in lieu of a $315,000 bond. Thomas-Hameen faces charges of robbery and various traffic violations and is being held in lieu of a $200,500 bond.

Both men were convicted of burglary last year. Johnson was convicted of aggravated sexual battery and misdemeanor theft in 2012 when he was a juvenile. Cops are looking for another 19-year-old suspect in the robbery.

Zimmerman told the newspaper that the arrests bring some closure as he comes to grips with losing his “best friend.”
