I don't agree with it, but it's got to be done in order to get anything passed.
We all have to make a sacrifice. Hell, seniors and veterans didn't even get an increase under Bush for what, three years?
Just vote those tea party kooks and loonies and deficit hawk republicans out of office in the mid-terms!
Just Obama playing chess again. He knows it'll die a horrible death in the House. Meanwhile, he's got a talking point for the mid terms. 'I offered the cuts they wanted, and they continue to destroy the country'.
I actually like the Medicare cuts in this offer. Negotiated rates with Big Pharma, and an increase in premium payments to wealthy retirees. I see nothing wrong with that, especially since those who avoid taxation via cap gains tax liability only, don't even pay for Medicare. The only cuts to SSI should be a revamp of the disability system to rid it of fraud, as well as means testing for retireesInversely. I speculate that calling this a compromise will hide his intentions well. While he proposes the cuts he sees as ideal, he can blame it on Republicans - with an "I offered the cuts they wanted" spin. This will appease the left wing of his party. His other policies do a good job of reflecting this.

Doesn't that depend on the slimming? What's wrong with his approach to Medicare? SSI is more complex. I don't see that passing anywhere. Especially since it has nothing to do with the deficitI don't know what you personally believe. But I can speak for your party. They preach the slimming down of social entitlements, but there's little to say this wouldn't cause harm. Eliminating fraud? Sure. Do that with a review of the programs to see if cuts are necessary - then cut them if it comes to that. Don't just skip the first bit.

Like hell we do. SS is not part of the problem. It's sustainable for quite a way into the future and would have been even more so had not politicians raided it over the years. Instead of undermining SS Obama should be insisting that those misappropriated funds be returned to the SS trust fund. He only has to raise the payroll tax cap and SS is solvent far, far into the future.I don't agree with it, but it's got to be done in order to get anything passed.

Bullshit. It's stupid politically. Repubs are going to go out in the midterm election and pound sand up peoples ass that Dems and President Obama want to cut the SS benefits Grandma and Grandpa earned and paid their whole lives for.Just Obama playing chess again.
