"Mandatory Youth Srvice" Bill Advances
Congress appears ready to pass an Obama administration plan that could create mandatory public service requirements for all American youth, fulfilling a campaign promise.
The bill, HR 1388: The Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act, otherwise known as the "GIVE Act," has already passed the House by a vote of 321-105.
On Tuesday, the Senate voted closure on the motion to proceed by a margin of 74-14 in a move that makes its ultimate passage likely.
The bill, promoted by the Obama administration as a means of encouraging America's youth to participate in voluntary community service, has received little scrutiny from Congress or the public.
Yet, a version of the bill in the House proposes to establish a Congressional Commission on Civil Service tasked with determining whether a mandatory service requirement for all young people in America could be developed and implemented, though it is not clear that provision will survive a conference committee.

Much ado about nothing here I see.
Adding a requirement to graduate that involes a class in coummunity work.
wow big scandal
It's World Net Daily. It's not a news source. Just because it dovetails with your prior beliefs doesn't mean it is true.
And, as I said, I read the article linked in the OP. It's just plain wrong, as is the WND piece.
Introducing kids how to be involved in their community is not a bad thing.
Hell look at all the attention we pay to teaching them about sex?
Everyone knows and parses what they learn in a sex ed class, the same can be done in the community action class.
Nah, there'd be some huge broohaha on how you can't force patriotism and the fact that making it mandatory would be against rights outlined in the constitution. The defining question my friend .. would you be supportive of this if Bush had proposed it?
Parents and spirituality introduces kids to community service, not the president.
Attacking the source is what the other side does my brother.
I've also posted a CNN video of Obama talking about mandatory service.
With respect, this is where the partisanship of democrats meets the road .. just as with the issue of war.
Obama talking about it and passing legislation requiring it are two very different things. In order for mandatory service to become law, it has to be passed by Congress. This bill does not require mandatory service from anyone anywhere.

it did at one time..they took it out in order to get it passed..
a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds
No. At one point it did indeed have a provision for setting up the congressional committee to explore, among eleven other topics, whether:
Granted, it was included because some folks in Congress and the President think its a good idea, but studying the subject and implementing it as law are very very different things.
But, the study couldn't even get past the House, let alone an actual mandatory service requirement.

As I said in my first post, this is a slippery-slope that should not be supported.
Why is there legislation about voluntary service for our youth? That makes no sense. If it's voluntary, why is a bill required?
I don't think this is worth arguing too deeply at this point .. but it demonstrates partisanship and what I don't like about it.
Please explain this ..

What in the fuck is he talking about?
I'm not going to watch but I assume it is a video of Obama talking about implementing mandatory service. We can agree that he supports mandatory service. I understand that. I don't support it. But this bill isn't that.
