Obama has an idea about affirmative action

The untold secret is that affirmative action has been far more beneficial to white women than it has for any other demographic in America .. and because white women tend to marry white guys .. guess who else benefits?

My question to Obama .. what next?

Always easy to make speeches.

Do we just ignore the systemic racism in American society because we now have what appears to be a black president?

Do you actually have a plan Mr. President or is this just another pr gimmick to impress white people on the right?

I'm bettin' the latter.

Nobody admitted any such thing.

Yes they did...

"Obama came out the other day and had some strong language about affirmative action and suggested making it needs based as opposed to race based."

"Moving it away from race-based to needs-based makes very good sense."

How can something be "BASED ON RACE" and NOT be "RACIST" policy?

Dunghead: I think a prerequisite to opposing something is that you know what it is. You apparently have no idea what affirmative action is, yet here you are.

Some people here apparently don't know what racism is, but they are still here arguing. Racism is the belief that one race is superior or inferior to another. If you have a policy based on race, it presumes one race must be superior or inferior to another, and in any event, they certainly are not equal, as that is the purpose for the policy.

What's really funny is, Barrack Obama could come out today and proclaim that AA is indeed a "racist policy" and you same pinheads would be here praising him for his courage! Go back and look at how many arguments we've had about AA being race-based and how wrong that was, while you knuckleheads defended it to the hilt in its present form, not a damn one of you even suggested it should be changed from race based to needs based, you were perfectly fine with it being racist policy!

Rare, but I agree with you on this one, women civil rights followed black civil rights closely in time and attained more privilege and they were easier on the [select]. That was an argument I gave long ago but as always it just wasn't true say the white naysayers who somehow someway cannot face the reality of racism. It doesn't fit their worldview so it must not exist.

Bold added. That view is limited and while true doesn't even touch racism. Racism is a way of thinking that boggles my conscious mind even today. The other day we are talking about LBJ, who I consider a great president for what he accomplished in civil rights and help for all Americans on the bottom ladder of life. And what is the immediate reaction of the white republicans - 'he made them lazy.' That is racism, a stereotype so embedded in a person's consciousness it immediately comes into the creation of reality.

"The remarkable thing is that we really love our neighbors as ourselves: we do unto others as we do unto ourselves. We hate others when we hate ourselves. We are tolerant of others when we tolerate ourselves. We forgive others when we forgive ourselves. We are prone to sacrifice others when we are ready to sacrifice ourselves." Eric Hoffer

They were easier on the [select]? What?

And women didn't closely follow, it took nearly a century more for women to be allowed to vote.

Bold added. I don't know who you talked to, or what they actually said, but I have never heard anyone say such a thing. While it is true, giving people a 'hand out' instead of a 'hand up' tends to encourage laziness, that is regardless of race, it is human nature. What you espoused, sounds like something plantation owners may have said about their slaves back in 1860 America. I think many of you liberal kooks LIVE back in that era.

My definition of racism is valid, you acknowledge that. It is the belief that one race is inferior or superior to another, and such a belief can be manifest in many ways. Affirmative Action is ONE of those ways. In an ever-so-subtle legislative way, it says; We believe black people to be inferior, therefore, we are establishing a racially discriminatory law, to make black people more 'equal' to white people in the job market. It also suggests the color of skin is a valid criteria when determining who to hire. In essence, AA reinforces the very racist stereotypes and beliefs it was intended to combat.

Now, I know how you Liberal types are all about "feelings" and the emotional significance of things. Well, think about a typical African-American of average intelligence and education... They get a job through Affirmative Action... How do you think it makes them feel regarding their self-esteem? They don't have the satisfaction of knowing they were hired because of merit, or because they impressed the prospective employer, or because they were articulate and knowledgeable... nope, it's only because their skin happened to be the right pigmentation, and that's all. Does THIS tell black people they are equal to whites? Or does it merely serve as antiquated patronization, based on racist stereotypes?

We can also venture into the philosophical arena... Is one kind of racism "better" than another? Can there be "good" racism? I happen to think there is no "good" or "better" racism, it is ALL deplorable. When you discriminate against people based on their skin color, it is wrong, regardless of what color they are. Affirmative Action does just that.

Where do you get such bizarre ideas?

If you were out of work and hungry and couldn't pay your rent would an uncle or friend offering you a job make you feel inferior? Do you think their self-esteem is raised when using food stamps knowing they didn't take a job offered to them because of their skin color?
