I hope you and yours have a great Holiday season as well. I’ve stated earlier and I’ll admit again there are people with far more knowledge of religion than I. So I’m open to learning. One thought was Jewish people don’t like those who convert. Not sure if that’s true or not but it’s possible. If I may ask are you Jewish? And if yes are you not a fan of those who convert like Ivanca thus the desire to police their behavior so to speak?

Thanks for the well wishes. No, I didn't begin this thread to talk about me. I pass no judgement on the act of religious conversion, only that if one does so publicly it suggests that they cease practicing other religions, certainly if the religion they are converting to requires it, as most do.
The passing thoughts which prompted the thread are posted in the OP. Not much time was spent on it so it will prove fruitless to dig for hidden meanings. Just some passing thoughts I presumed would kick off some discussion. That it has.

I find it difficult that a religion can ‘tell you’ you can’t share gifts with each other. My buddy I’m referencing was a groomsmen in my wedding. Now I’m really curious if his rabbi would excommunicate him from temple because he gave his kids a gift on Christmas a few years back just because. Would seem pretty harsh to me but then I’m not all that familiar with Judaism and maybe that’s how they police their own. Something I can research I guess.

Just like Christianity it comes in many forms from barely religious to extremely religious.
You know, it's not like all Catholics are dressing inn special clothes or controlling what they eat when. Same can be said of Muslims or Jews. It really seems to be up to the individual just how immersed they wish to be. Few Christians follow every edict in the Bible.
Freedom of religion is a good thing.
Including freedom from religion of that's what one chooses.
It would be inaccurate to judge all participants in any general religion by one set of requirements.

Well, that's the thing about religions.
They all seem to be predicated on expansion.
And that is only logical.
A set of beliefs that an individual arrives at independently requires no coordination with other humans.
One which requires the participation of many individuals would die out if it did not have mechanisms for bringing in new participants.

Jewish families give gifts for Hannukah. In fact, the Jewish kids I went to school with used to brag how they got gifts on each day that the holiday lasted. We were envious. lol
You're right about the JW kids. They don't celebrate any holidays.

JW doesn't do the crass commercialized Christmas thing? I did not know that.
Maybe that's part of why they always seem to struggle to build a big following. I wonder if they lose young adults who were raised that way as children and then want to make their own choices. JW is so cult-like. Not as bad a Scientology, but still cult-like.

It is very cult-like. And no, they do not recognize any of the traditional Christian holy days -- including Easter and Christmas. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I was a room mother when my kids were in grade school. The JW kids had to go to a separate room during holiday parties, even though the school had quit calling them "Christmas" and "Halloween" and "Easter" parties. They were "spring," "fall," and "winter" parties instead. The JW ppl who were our neighbors hated Halloween most of all and thought of it as a celebration of Satan.

That almost certainly has to drive children away from the church. For them to be in public schools, see and hear the glee of the other kids, and to be denied.
Yeah, it's a cult alright. I recall now they are supposed to give a huge part of their wealth to the church. If they were to spend any of that on decorations or gifts it would not be going to the church. They are expected to live their lives for the church.
Kind of hard to exist in today's society under such severe restrictions.
They ideally need to just completely withdraw into isolated compounds to keep that going.
But then, of course, the young ones would be curious about the outside world, causing problems.

My only real quibble about them is their ridiculous refusal to accept some life-saving medical measures including receiving blood transfusions. Many moons ago my best friend at work (hospital) was a JW. She almost died giving birth to her one and only child, from loss of blood. She said that if her daughter was ever hurt like in a car accident or something that she would likewise refuse a transfusion even if it meant that she would die. As fate would have it, the next year I and my premature baby almost died during his birth. We both received transfusions that saved our lives. Paula came to see me in the hospital and said she was glad that I didn't croak and said that since I wasn't a JW there was no sin in receiving the units of blood. Whew, I was so relieved! </sarcasm> lol
