I have no idea of why it is happening...nor even IF it is happening.

As for why I "think" or "guess" about it...I just don't have a good basis for a guess. I do suspect that, in general, progressives are more intelligent and reasonable than conservatives, so I think when further studies are done, the reason for the phenomena (if it truly is so) probably makes lots of sense.
