As always you post some link you found on the internets and think it furthers your ideology. You apply no critical thinking skills to the article in question but just blindly post it thinking you are proving something. Then I have to come along and clean up the mess after you have pooped in your pants. So here goes.

Deshy thinks that this guy is such a wonderful guy for paying $12/hour. He is lauded. Should be pat on the back. Amazingly he is able to pay them $12/hour and keep a burger between $3 and $5. Why, how can that be says Deshy? He must be some new age economic svengali. Man the torpedoes SCREAMS Deshy. This is PROOF. PROOF I SAY, that McDonalds is screwing over its workers.

But, not so fast Deshy. Let's say for a second that McDonalds pays their workers $7.40 an hour and this guy (bless his heart) pays them $12/hr. That is a difference of $4.60/hour right?

and their cost of living is also higher. That is why the Fed minimum should be for the state with the LOWEST cost of living. Let the other states adjust by their cost of living standards if they want. Minimum wage in NYC should be higher than in BFE Mississippi.

You all say it wasn't meant to be a living wage; but it can be used to make a household more comfortable or to let those kids save up so they can become independent.

Raise it to where it should have been (10.50-ish with inflation) and then index to inflation.

And as we can see from this story - it actually benefits businesses to pay workers more; they get more loyal workers, workers who have better skills, and the business doesn't fold because of the higher wage.

Because for the billionth time... if you raise the wage of the unskilled workers, do you think the skilled workers will want a commensurate raise? Because that is what happens. When that happens the costs of goods and services goes up. I know many liberals think those evil corporations should just pay more and eat the difference in their profit margin, but that is not what happens. The shareholders of those companies are relying on the profit margin so that their 401ks/403bs/457's/IRAs etc... go up so that they can retire without having to rely solely on SS.

That is not true. That money comes from somewhere else. You are taking it from the skilled and giving it to the unskilled. The money doesn't just magically become available.

Yes, it can... but if you raise it to that level by force, then you lose that, because the employee can go anywhere that is hiring and secure the same wage. By offering more than the minimum, the employer is gaining more skill/longer term employees. You are reducing their competitive advantage in this area if you force everyone up to their wage scale. In order to maintain that advantage, they would have to raise their wages up commensurate with the increase in minimum wage. Which again leads to the question... where does that extra money come from?

tc, when you look into unemployment numbers look at the youth unemployment rate. They have the highest number and are the one's hit hardest by increases in wages. (I will say I'm not completely clear how they come up their numbers. If you are in school full time and don't have a part-time job are you considered unemployed?) I agree with you that more money for kids being able to save for their future is a good thing. Where I disagree with you is that it should be forced on employers by the government. When wages are forced higher more kids are going to be unemployed.
