Maine Governor wants to stop EBT being used for candy/soft drinks

Wrong priorities. Look up the typical American menu from the 50s through the 70s. Feed people(especially kids)that, but take away the cell phones and the rest of the electronic babysitters and bring back a rigorous phys ed program to every school.

Overall costs?

Let's say you get an EBT card worth $150 once a month. Whether you spend it on healthy food or junk it has to last you a month so the sensible action is to buy staples that you can eat for 30 days. You're not getting an extra card if you spent the first on cookies and candy and have nothing left after two weeks.

This goes back to the statistic about the 82% getting cards because they can't work, not because they don't want to work. The naysayers think it's the other way around. We've had threads here about Wal-Mart employees or military families using EBT because they can't make it even with a paycheck. My position is that if your life is so disadvantaged you have to scrape by on EBT and food banks, you can have a Snickers once in awhile with my blessing.

What happens when the parent(s) don't spend that EBT money sensibly and midway through the month there is none left to feed the kids?

If a military family has to use EBT, that's disgraceful. They are serving the country and potentially putting their lives on the line for the rest of us. If a Walmart employee does, not so much. They get paid a low wage because they do a low skilled job.

Disadvantaged my ass. That implies that they are where they are due to nothing within their control. Most people, whether you are willing to admit it or not, are where they are due to choices they made. If you want one to have a Snickers, find them and buy it with your money.
